Job Title: Special Collections Student Assistant

 

Hours per week: 7-15 hours Wage/Salary: $17.25 per hour Start Date: TBA

Special Collections in the Cal Poly Humboldt Library is hiring student assistants for a variety of projects. Under the supervision of the Special Collections Librarian and the Archivist & Digital Publications Specialist, student duties include:

 

  • Providing scanning and microfilm assistance to Cal Poly Humboldt students and community users
  • Completing collection inventories and photo duplication requests
  • Responding to photo duplication requests via email
  • Promoting Special Collections via social media and exhibits
  • Transcribing and digitizing archival documents
  • Performing quality control for archival projects
  • Retrieving and reshelving books and collection boxes from storage
  • Entering data into spreadsheets for digital collections
  • Organizing archival supplies and completing other office tasks
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Skills Required: 

Experience using the Humboldt Room collections or another archive. Ability to work independently, solve problems, and exercise good judgment.

Other Competencies Required: 

Dependability, initiative, an interest in Special Collections or library work, the ability to lift 40 pounds, and the ability to pass a Library of Congress classification/shelving test. Some work will be completed in archival storage, which contains dust and lacks windows.

Preferred Skills: 

Ability to read cursive and print handwriting. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel), Adobe Photoshop, scanning, efficient typing, web creation, video editing, or text editing is preferred. Google Docs and Google Calendar
