The est. number of Indians from Weitchpec 40 miles on down to the mouth is 4,4000. Oct.3, 1871 During our voyage the last 25 miles to the mouth we saw no miners nor white man and very few Indians. There is very little level land. Where the forests are not, there are ferns. These vast fern covered slopes may be somewhat subjugated by close pasturing.
