"Old Timer Do You Remember When" Bitumen from the Santa Cruz Mtns was hauled to Eureka as ballast and was used to pave streets in Eureka's downtown. The first blocks were paved on F street between 2nd & 4th. A foundation of concrete was first laid and tamped down by hand. Then the bitumen was heated and spread by hand.
