The first courthouse was on 2nd between J and K. That block was purchased by the county in 1860 and on it was a large building that had been used as a lodging and boarding house. The county reconstructed the building and added wings to it. In April 1861 the county occupied it. After the next courthouse was completed and occupied at 4th & J, the old one was used for storage. Finally, in 1897 the BOS decided to remove it. So the building was burned at 9 AM on Dec. 2, 1897.
