Text: RFD Genzoli - article says Major Pierson B. Reading explored the Trinity area in 1849, trapping expedition. In June 1849 he went on an exploring sortie & that's when he found gold in the gravel bars. When news of this discovery reached Sacramento, it touched off a rush to the Trinity. This generated efforts to find a shorter easier route to the Trinity from the coast.
