Text: Whole page on Carlotta. Photos of note: Carlotta Hotel, historic Cuddeback home on site of early day Indian attacks; strangs station; Carlotta Store (Francis Tann's headquarters). About 1893 John M. Vance (John Vance was his uncle, he died in 1892 & John M. took over the empire) started the town & named it after his daughter. In the mid 1890's he built sumptuous home a hillside, a hotel, general store & sev. houses in his new town. He never logged there as he so appreciated beauty he kept it as a resort. At about the same time he extended his Eel River & Eureka River Road from Burnell's (near Alton) to Carlotta. About 1912 the 3 partners Edsen, Haight & Mitchell bought the entire town from the John M. Vance estate. John M. died in 1907.
