Provost Communication: Monday, August 17, 2026

August 19, 2026

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to Academic Year 2026–27! I truly hope you had the kind of summer that has made you feel well-prepared to begin the new semester with everything you need to be successful in your endeavors.

This week marks the return of many students, as well as the arrival of our newest Lumberjacks, who will spend the week participating in Orientation and Welcome Week activities. I hope you have the opportunity to take a moment to lend a helping hand, answer questions, or point new students in the right direction, helping them feel excited about their new home, Humboldt. You can explore Orientation and Welcome Week activities at this link: Orientation & Welcome Week. Thank you to all the faculty and staff helping to welcome our students!

Donut Day, Coming to a Classroom Near You: Monday, August 24, 2026

Classes begin on Monday, August 24, 2026! President Carvajal’s longstanding tradition on the first day of class is “Donut Day.” The President, Interim Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Success, and I will spend the morning trekking across campus to visit classrooms, hand out donuts, and  welcome our students and faculty with cheer. If you see us, come say hello and grab a donut!

Career Development Center Part-time Job Fair: Tuesday, August 25, 2026 from 10-2pm The Career Development Center will host its annual Part-time Job Fair for students on Tuesday, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the University Quad. The fair is a start-of-the-year tradition that helps students get acclimated to both the campus and the local business community while connecting them with employment opportunities for the academic year. The theme is "Get a Taco, Get a Job," and students can enjoy a complimentary taco bar before or after exploring job opportunities. Did you know that the Part-time Job Fair has been happening for nearly 20 years?!

Please print and display the attached flyer where students will see it. For more information, please contact the Career Development Center's Employer Relations Coordinator, Ann Johnson-Cruz, at acj1@humboldt.edu or by calling extension x4582.

President’s Fall Welcome: This morning from 9 to 11:30 am in the West Gym

Finally, I hope to see you this morning at the President's Fall Welcome from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the West Gym. This year's Fall Welcome will depart from the traditional presentation format to engage faculty and staff in envisioning our next campus strategic plan. It is extremely important that everyone who wants to help shape our next strategic plan has the opportunity to do so. Join us for collegial conversations, collaborative thinking about our future, and some fun.

Welcome Back!

Sincerely,

Shawna
