October 19, 2025

Good morning and happy Wednesday. We are definitely in the busy, busy, busy time of the semester with lots of work to push through as we near the end of the semester and a number of events and activities to engage in. I hope you can find that balance between accomplishing your tasks, engaging in campus and community events, and taking good care of yourselves.

Well Done: Guggenheim Fellow Justin Maxon

Congratulations to Cal Poly Humboldt lecturer Justin Maxon, who is among the 100th class of Guggenheim Fellows, including 198 individuals working across 53 disciplines. Justin was chosen from a pool of nearly 3,500 applicants. His fellowship project, Decolonizing Care, is an applied research project that builds on his work for a New York Times Opinion piece, a collaboration with Judith Surber that examined the systemic failure in care for fentanyl addiction through the story of one family—the Surbers—on the Hoopa Valley Reservation. The project will develop training materials for medical professionals on the West Coast to establish best practices for fentanyl addiction treatment. Congratulations Justin!

October 8 Film Screening: Tonight, April 23, 2025, from 6 pm-8 pm in Gist Hall

You’re invited! The Cal Poly Humboldt Jewish Student Group is hosting a screening of October 8, which offers a look at the explosion of antisemitism on college campuses, social media, and in the streets of America, beginning the day after the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas. Through meticulous investigation, the film also uncovers how over decades, Hamas created sophisticated networks in America to permeate U.S. institutions and examines the tsunami of online antisemitism, propaganda, and disinformation unleashed by Iran, China, and Russia, with the sole purpose of dividing American society.

Office of Research & Sponsored Programs Spring 2025 Newsletter

The Office of Research publishes four newsletters during the academic year: fall, winter, spring, and summer. These newsletters are used to highlight new awards, share what improvements our office is currently working on, update our researchers on any important changes that may affect their projects, and keep the campus community up to date with relevant grant news.

For the convenience of our PIs, we've archived our past issues, available here. Click Here to read the Spring 2025 Newsletter on ISSUU. For an accessible copy, please reach out to Research Development Support & Marketing Coordinator, Cara Peters, at cara.peters@humboldt.edu.

Have a wonderful rest of your week.

Sincerely,

Jenn Capps
