About Andrew
Why did you choose this program?
The Religious Studies program at HSU gave me the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how our beliefs, rights, and rituals inform our worldview and, therefore, our decision-making process through a plethora of both experiential and academic courses. I chose this program because this knowledge is infinitely applicable in understanding our society.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
My work in nonprofits, my schooling at law school, and my volunteer work are enriched by my ability to tie the actions and beliefs of others to their worldviews as I see them. This has helped me be an effective leader and a clear communicator.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I enjoyed every aspect of the RS program at HSU. What mattered most to me was the dedicated attention of the faculty in mentorship as well as their in-depth knowledge and passion for their subjects.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
This program gives you what you put into it. I have often joked about how knowledge of religion and worldview feels like a cheat-code or a superpower in the “real world”. If you push your limits of interpretation and acceptance in order to analyze your subject, you will come to a greater understanding. You will be surprised at how well that understanding will serve you in your career and life.
After HSU I went on to teach at a Catholic School in Santa Clara, California, before changing directions and attending the University of Tulsa, College of Law. I have since been a Tribal Administrator for the Yomba Shoshone Tribe in central Nevada. I recently moved back to the Bay Area to focus more on my work with the BUFFALO project and my volunteer work overseas with Different Rhythm Foundation. I will always be grateful to the HSU RS department.
