Opportunities in Bloom- October 2025

Events!

Math Colloquium with Dr. Adriana Salerno

Pre-Colloquium Tea: (Light snacks and refreshments) Thursday, October 9 (3:30-4pm) in BSS 312

Colloquium Talk: Thursday, October 9 (4-4:50pm) in SCI-B 135
Speaker: Dr. Adriana Salerno (2025 Kieval Speaker)
Title: Arithmetic Geometry: From Circles to Circular Counting

I will show you a glimpse of one of the most exciting facets of research in modern number theory: arithmetic geometry. We will start with a (gentle) introduction to this area of research through some familiar examples. Then we will move on to a not so familiar example where we count solutions of equations mod p. I will end by answering two of the oldest and most mystifying questions in mathematics: how does this work fit into the bigger picture, and who cares?

“Where did we come from? Revealing the Mysteries of Galaxy Formation And Evolution”

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is reshaping our understanding of how galaxies formed and evolved in the early Universe. Recent JWST observations reveal a surprising abundance of mature galaxies at much earlier times than current theories predict. This talk explores how galaxies like the Milky Way came to be, using absorption line spectroscopy to study the otherwise invisible gas that fuels star formation. It discusses the method’s challenges, new advances in observational technology, and a novel approach using fast radio bursts to trace cosmic gas; all aimed at deepening our understanding of galaxy evolution and ultimately answering the question: Where did we come from?
