James M. Floss

The purpose of the JAMES M. FLOSS SCHOLARSHIP FUND is to support students majoring or minoring in Dance, Music, and Theatre Arts or other performing arts, with a focus on Theatre Arts including acting, directing, and storytelling. A $2,000 award will be given annually for a period of five years. Recipients can receive the award only once. Recipients will be selected by the Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre, and awarded by the Financial Aid office. Joshua J. Frye

Dr. Joshua Frye was recently solicited by the executive leadership of the National Communication Association in Washington D.C. to submit a Case Study for the Association's website. Dr. Frye's Case Study provides public education and advocacy for Communication Departments around the United States who are currently facing or may face in the future, threats to the integrity of the public speaking course at institutions of higher learning.

Dr. Frye was solicited by the leadership of the National Communication Association in Washington D.C. to provide a case study for the preservation and protection of the foundational course in oral communication in the context of the recent structural and political challenges in California and the CSU for the GE subarea A1 course in the Golden Four statewide requirements. The case study is based on the experience and strategic responses of the Department of Communication at Cal Poly Humboldt and is available on the NCA website as an advocacy resource for disciplinary colleagues across the U.S. facing similar challenges.

Michael Bruner, Professor Emeritus, Communication, recently published in the Journal of Communication and Media Research the article, "A comparative analysis of public discourse in and outside of Nigeria on the right to water."
Joshua J. Frye, Steven R. Goldzwig, James F. Woglom

Dr. Joshua J. Frye and his co-author Dr. Steven R. Goldzwig (Professor Emeritus at Marquette University) have published a new scholarly monograph. Colleague and collaborator Dr. James F. Woglom provided original artwork for the book. Rhetoric and Democracy in a Post-Truth Era offers a timely examination of public communication and political culture in the United States and the systemic feedback loops that have amplified democratic dysfunction and violence. Frye and Goldzwig identify and analyze four key perils (post truth; polarization; [social media] platforms; and populism) in the interplay of complex systems.

Dr. Armeda Reitzel (Professor, Communication), Julia Kurtz (Student, Communication), and Josué Valdez (Student, Communication) gave a 60-minute presentation titled “The Magazine Cover Story: LibreTexts Engages Students’ Interests and Insights through Snippets and Snapshots” on March 7, 2024 at the LibreTexts Open Education Week 2024 Conference. The three co-presenters shared their perspectives on the use of LibreTexts open educational resources as the foundation for creative semester-long projects in two different courses: interpersonal communication and intercultural communication. The talk focused on the use of open pedagogy in undergraduate education.

Dr. Armeda Reitzel (Professor, Communication) and Rosalinda Frick (Senior Communication Major) delivered a conference presentation titled "Engaging the Creativity of Three Diverse Student Populations Using a LibreTexts OER" at the 2023 Open Education Conference on November 8, 2023. Dr. Reitzel was one of several authors for a new open educational resource titled "Interpersonal Communication: Context and Connection (OERI)" that was first published by LibreTexts in 2022.
Maxwell Schnurer and Steve Ladwig

Dr. Maxwell Schnurer and Steve Ladwig received a US Department. of Justice grant to support a collaborative program between Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods offering a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Communication at Pelican Bay State Prison. This will be the first B.A. program in the US offered at a level-four, maximum security prison and in person. Partnering with Project Rebound and the Advising and Academic Career Center, the program will also provide re-entry support and post-degree employment preparation. This work will strengthen post-release career opportunities for incarcerated students, while reducing recidivism and enhancing community safety.

Armeda Reitzel, Professor Emerita of Communication, was invited to give a presentation as a featured speaker by LibreTexts at the Open Education Week 2023 Conference. Open Education Week is an annual celebration of the people and activities that apply open practices to education around the world. Her presentation, "Engaging three student populations with a LibreTexts OER," focused on her use of an OER that she helped co-author.
