The Department of Economics fosters a thriving community both on and off campus with opportunities for collaborative research, forums and social activities.
From our Economic Forum to community internships and service learning, we aim to prepare students for their career journey by making lasting relationships and connections.
Economic Forum
Founded in 2007 by two Economic majors, the Econ forum is an opportunity for students to meet in a casual setting to discuss impactful economics articles and socialize.
The Short Run
An annual newsletter that includes articles, interviews, and coverage of department events. Capstone students who write the newsletter gain valuable experience designing and editing a professional economics publication.
Internships, Assistantships & Service Learning
The Humboldt Economic Index is an ongoing collaborative research project involving Cal Poly Humboldt faculty and students and participation by many private businesses and government agencies. Humboldt Professor Erick Eschker is the Director and two economics majors are project interns.
This paid opportunity allows students to gain experience in community-based research. Student positions include Assistant Editor and Assistant Analyst.
Many economics students complete a paid summer internship locally or at one of the many SBDCs throughout California. And a number of students land their first job with the SBDC after graduation.
Northern California Small Business Development Center (SBDC)
Established by alumnus Don Lewis (Econ ‘66) in memory of professor Ted Ruprecht, this opportunity provides a stipend for 2-3 students per year to work with faculty on economics research projects.
Economics students who do well in their core classes have the opportunity to become Instructional Student Assistants. We pay our undergraduate students to be student instructors for our supplemental instruction course, graders for select courses, and tutors. In addition to being paid, ISAs improve their oral communication skills and the experience strengthens their performance in other Economics classes.
