To be eligible, students must be either a declared English major or an enrolled graduate student in the M.A. in English program, have a GPA of 2.5 or above, demonstrate financial need (based on FAFSA application), be enrolled full-time in the upcoming academic year (at least 12 units for undergraduates and at least 8 units for graduate students), and have at least one full-time semester of coursework left to complete in the major or the M.A. program. Travel Funding

The English department Travel Funding Awards are available for English majors and graduate students. Each award can cover up to $250 for student travel. There are three undergraduate and three graduate awards offered each academic year. Each student is eligible for one award per year, and applicants who are listed on the conference program will be given priority.

Students have traveled to the following conferences, often working in collaboration with faculty to offer presentations and workshops in professional settings.

A few examples are:

The priority deadline is November 1 no matter when the travel takes place in a given academic year (academic year is July 1 through June 30). If funds remain available after the priority deadline disbursement, students can also apply for funding by April 1.

Internships & Employment

Students have the opportunity to work closely with an English department faculty member by serving as an intern in an undergraduate writing, linguistics, English Education, or literature course.

If you think you would like to intern, choose an instructor who knows your abilities and who teaches classes that you’ve taken in previous semesters. Before registration begins, visit the instructor during office hours and discuss the internship and the role you would like to play. Instructors approach internships differently, and it is important for students to know what may be involved. Students may be asked to assist with the following tasks: reading and responding to student writing, leading small group discussions, giving brief lectures to a class, and meeting students outside of class for informal discussion. Not all instructors ask interns to assist with all of these activities, and not every instructor is willing to have an intern in the classroom. Contact the Department of English office for more information.

Undergraduates accepted to an internship should register for English 482: Internship in the Teaching of Writing, Linguistics, or Literature (2 units). Graduate students accepted to an internship should register for English 681: Internship in Teaching or English 684 Internship in Teaching ESL.

Library Internships are available in Special Collections, media, scholarly communications and publishing, and other areas of the University Library. The Library Scholar program awards a $500 stipend for selected interns. Interns undergo a rigorous curriculum which prepares them for continued work in library and information sciences, scholarly communications, publishing, or digital arts and media. For more information and examples of work completed by former library interns, please visit the Library website
