Why did you choose this program?
It was close to home, a beautiful area, and small and intimate.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
Well, one or more of my teachers told me I'd need a strong back, should get to know the school's secretary and custodian, and be prepared for vocal fatigue. That all turned out to be true!
And, I got to know other students and get individualized attention and help from teachers in smaller and personalized classes and performance ensembles. I was able to get basic instruction in instrumental families, theory, ear training, and was really able to hone and refine my singing and performance skills, particularly in the areas of sight reading and technique.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
The people and performance groups.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
Humboldt is a gorgeous area full of giant redwoods, the ocean, and down-to-earth people. HSU offers engaging and personable education, and in such a relaxing and beautiful area. Cost of living is also less than many other areas.
My world of music and teaching since graduating over 22 years ago has been pretty diverse. I've played and sang in various genres and have developed my own way of teaching singing that is geared toward personal growth and healing. I have also led community singing and engaged in music ministry. Most of my experience has been in elementary, but recently I've transitioned into secondary choral.
