Cost
Program costs: Gerontology
Cost should be clear from the start, so you can plan with confidence.
Below are the program fees, details about materials, and financial information.

Program fees
- Per unit: $527
- Per course (3 units): $1,581
- Certificate in Gerontology (12 units): $6,324
- Advanced Certificate in Gerontology Leadership (24 units): $12,648 total, including the four courses of the Certificate in Gerontology
Because you pay by the course and can take one course per session, the cost is spread across the year.
Course materials
We have worked to keep material costs low.
Several courses use free, openly licensed texts or faculty-provided readings with no textbook purchase required. Where a textbook is assigned, it will be listed in the course syllabus before the course begins.

Paying for your education
You may want to explore:
- Employer tuition assistance or professional development funds, especially if you work in health care, social services, or aging services.
- Workforce development programs in your county.
- Payment plans are available through Cal Poly Humboldt with three installments per semester.
- If cost is a concern, please talk with an advisor. We would rather help you find a way forward than have you set aside this goal.
Applying for financial aid
You are encouraged to explore your financial aid options such as loans or grants. The first step is to complete the FAFSA or CADAA for the upcoming school year. Humboldt's school code is 001149.
While it is ideal to apply during the priority filing period (October-March each year), you can apply anytime for financial aid. It typically takes 4-6 weeks to be informed of your financial aid eligibility and offer.
There are many different types of financial aid, and the type you get depends on which program you're pursuing.
Certificates: Financial aid for the Gerontology Certificate of Study and the Gerontology Leadership Advanced Certificate of Study is limited to federal student loans. Grants, such as Pell or Cal Grant, are not available for the certificates.
Bachelor's degree: The Bachelor of Professional Studies in Gerontology is eligible for federal and state financial aid, including grants and loans, once it's approved by the CSU Chancellor's Office.

A special note about fee waivers
Fee Waivers are only applicable to stateside program tuition and fees. They are not applicable to self-support programs offered through any Extended Education unit in the CSU system, such as Gerontology.
