Faculty, Staff & Students

The people behind the program

This program was built by Cal Poly Humboldt faculty from psychology, kinesiology, the humanities, and social work who have spent their careers alongside older adults, families, and the professionals who serve them.

We know that students learn best when they feel known, and we have designed this program so that you are never just a name on a screen.

You will have faculty who respond to your work, an advisor who knows your goals, and classmates from communities much like yours.

Program Lead and Advisor:
Jamie Jensen, MSW, PhD

Dr. Jensen leads the Gerontology program and teaches GERO 301, Foundations in Rural Gerontology.

Rooted in Humboldt County, Dr. Jensen brings more than 30 years of experience in social work and aging services, with expertise in gerontological practice, rural practice, online education, and California's public human services system.

“I believe the people best prepared to serve rural elders are often the ones already doing it: caregivers, aides, outreach workers, neighbors. My research looks at the relationships and community ties that help people age well, and that idea shapes this program. You'll learn in your own community, from the people around you, and bring that knowledge back to them. I'm glad to talk with you about whether this program fits your goals.”

Staff

Admissions, registration, and enrollment services are provided by the College of Extended Education (CEE).

A program advisor can help you think through whether the program fits your goals, your schedule, and the work you hope to do.

Advisory group

We are forming a program advisory group of practitioners, community members, and partners from across rural California. Their guidance will help keep the program connected to the needs of the communities our students serve.

Please check back for a list of the advisory group members.

Community practitioners and partners

Much of what students learn comes from the people already doing this work: care coordinators, hospice staff, senior center directors, family caregivers, and elders themselves. We are grateful for the practitioners and organizations who open their doors to our students.

Student and alumni stories

The first certificate students are planned to begin in fall 2027. As they move through the program, we will share their stories here, in their own words, and with their permission.
