Get Involved

There are many ways for students to get involved with the History department, both on and off campus. Our aim is to create an open, inclusive community where students can thrive.

The History Club is a student-run organization open to all students interested in history, offering a supportive community and opportunities for networking. Meeting bi-weekly on Fridays, the club organizes activities such as trips to national AHA conferences, local historical site visits, and academic workshops—shaped each semester by the interests and initiative of its members.

The Humboldt Student History Conference is an annual spring event where students present their research to peers, faculty, and the public in a supportive academic setting. It includes a Friday evening keynote by a guest scholar and student presentations on Saturday; participants enroll in History 394 for 1 unit and prepare with a faculty mentor.

History Day is a one-unit course for Cal Poly Humboldt students who help organize and judge the regional History Day competition, a spring event for 4th–12th graders focused on historical research and creative presentations. Participants receive training and support a statewide program that encourages critical thinking through student-created papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, websites, and posters based on an annual theme.

Internship Opportunities

Internships are a great way to explore how your history training can be applied in real-world settings, while also helping you build valuable skills, gain professional experience, and expand your network. They enhance your resume, can lead to future job opportunities, and count toward the 4-unit Practicum requirement for the History major.

Local internship opportunities include:

Classroom Assistants

The History Department provides opportunities for advanced majors to intern with professors as classroom assistants in lower-division General Education courses. Classroom assistants perform a range of duties including offering review sessions and guidance to students enrolled in the course. In some cases, assistants may also assist a professor in her/his research activities as well.

Credit hours are available to classroom assistants. Experience as a classroom assistant can be especially valuable to students planning on graduate school or entrance into a teacher credentialing program.

Interested students should contact a professor they would like to work with or get in touch with the chair of the History Department.
