This system-wide keynote will both in-person and simulcast, and will feature thought leaders Kate Gordon, Ian Klaus, and Shankar Raman, exploring how California can shape a more connected and resilient global future.

Speakers

Kate Gordon

Kate Gordon is CEO of CA FWD, a statewide organization advancing a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive economy across California. For more than two decades, she has worked at the intersection of climate change, energy policy, and equitable economic development. Most recently, she served in the Biden–Harris administration as Senior Advisor to U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

Previously, Gordon held senior roles in California state government, including Director of the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research and Senior Climate Policy Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom, where she helped launch major initiatives integrating climate and economic strategy statewide. She holds a J.D. and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from UC Berkeley, serves on multiple boards, teaches at UC Berkeley, and is a Non-resident Scholar at Carnegie California.

Jaishankar Raman

Jaishankar Raman, PhD, is Executive Director of International Affairs for the California State University Office of the Chancellor. In this role, he oversees systemwide study abroad programs, campus agreements and MOUs, and serves as the senior international officer for the CSU’s 22 universities.

Before joining CSU, Dr. Raman was Assistant Provost for International Affairs and Professor of Economics at Valparaiso University. He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Bombay, an M.A. from Fordham University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in International Economics and Economic Development.

Ian Klaus

Ian Klaus is the founding director of Carnegie California and a leading scholar on urbanization, geopolitics, and global challenges. He brings extensive experience in subnational diplomacy and public policy, having served as deputy U.S. negotiator for Habitat III, senior adviser for global cities at the U.S. State Department, and a member of the Policy Planning Staff.

Klaus has also helped lead the development of the Urban 20 and Urban 7 engagement groups and advised the National Intelligence Council on global urban trends. He holds an M.A. from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and a PhD in international history from Harvard University, and has published widely on urbanization and global affairs.
