John Baker

Journalism, 1998

John Baker, Journalism, 1998, worked several years for multiple Bay Area newspapers before entering public service. He went back to school, earning an MPA from San Francisco State University, and currently works as a local government liaison for the State of California. He was elected to the South San Francisco Unified School District’s Board of Trustees in 2016, and currently serves as its president.

Sophi Buetens

Journalism, 1985

Sophi Buetens, Journalism, 1985, attended HSU from 1980 as a freshman through 1985 with one year on the Cal State international program in Madrid, Spain. Since then she has worked as a journalist and elementary and secondary school teacher (Spanish). Her two adult children live in Oakland. One is a software engineer and the other is studying at Berkeley to be a science teacher. She and her husband were thrilled to move back to Arcata after many years in the Bay Area.

Meg Godlewski

Journalism, 1987

Meg Godlewski, Journalism, 1987, writes video scripts for an online ground school for an international aviation company. She also travels around the country with Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association helping lapsed pilots get back into the cockpit. She is a full-time flight instructor and a columnist for Aviation for Women Magazine and writes stories for AOPA Flight Training. Away from the airport, Meg is working on _Payback is a Bitch_ and _ Sometimes it has Puppies_ , the sequel to _ The Thin Line Between Guts and Stupidity_ , a coming of age story based on experiences breaking into journalism while a student at HSU. Meg plans to attend the MLJ reunion in November.

Elizabeth J. Hilker

Journalism, 1991

Elizabeth J. Hilker, Journalism, 1991, has a daughter who started as a freshman majoring in Geology in August 2017 at HSU!

Michelle I Teasley (formerly Teets)

Journalism, 1998

Michelle I. Teasley (née Teets), 1998 Journalism, after working as a reporter for several years, and then being a stay-at-mom for several more, returned to school to become a registered nurse. Teasley is currently a charge nurse on the Progressive Care Unit at Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding. She lives with her husband Tim, also a 1998 HSU grad, two kids, Kara, 13, and Matthew, 11, in Anderson, Calif.

Martha A. Gabriel

Martha A. Gabriel, 1964 Journalism, just joined Forever Humboldt and is looking to hear from others she might have known while attending HSC, 1960 to 1964.

Tami Miller Nelson

JournalismSociology, 2001

Tami Miller Nelson, 2001 Journalism, has begun her first term on the board as a Los Rios Community College Trustee. The Los Rios Community College District is the second largest multi-college district in California and serves more than 75,000 students.

Journalism, 2001

Michael Bronfman, 2001 Journalism, works as a journeyman stagehand through IATSE Local 122. Bronfman has a wife and dog and owns a home in San Diego.

Gayle Hall

Journalism, 1972

Gayle Hall, 1973 Journalism, teaches English as a Second Language and Citizenship Preparation at Torrance Adult School. She has worked for Torrance Unified School District for more than 20 years and recently received the the Certificated Employee of the Year award. She and husband Tom Hall (’74, History) met and married while in college. They have been married for 45 years and have three sons. A favorite activity is going for long walks at a local beach. Prior to her teaching career, Hall worked as a magazine editor and writer. While attending HSU, she worked part-time as a feature writer for the Eureka Times-Standard.

Melody Stone

Journalism, 2007

Melody Stone, 2007 Journalism, after three years in public media at Capital Public Radio, just started as the marketing and communication specialist at the University of Nevada, Reno journalism school. Stone is also teaching a design lab.
