Careers & Alumni

The Journalism major prepares students for careers in digital media production, news, public relations, radio, media research and analysis and related fields.

Our primary focus is on producing ethical media practitioners while teaching students how to think more critically about the media they consume and produce. Students learn ways to communicate information effectively and tell compelling stories across media technologies. They study the role of the media in society and learn how media industries shape culture and are affected by political and economic systems.

Javier Rojas

Journalism, 2016

After taking on various reporter roles in Southern California, in April Javier accepted a dream job as a media relations specialist at Cal State Northridge. The transition from daily reporting to a communication position in higher education is something that Javier has been working towards since graduating from Humboldt State. While his love for writing never wavered, he's excited to return to a role in the CSU system where he can highlight the work of students.

Misha Burke

Journalism, 2014

Misha Burke, 2014 Journalism, currently works at the California Association of Health Facilities as a Marketing & Communications Specialist—a job that took a year and a half to find. Burke has been able to take what she learned from in her Journalism and Graphic Design courses and apply them to this job. If it wasn't for HSU's Journalism and Art departments (faculty and students), Burke says she wouldn't be as successful as she is now.
