How I Got Published Again After a 33-year Hiatus and a Writer Learns to Paint

Barry Evans had two successful "science-lite" books published in the early 1990s, one with a five-figure advance. How times have changed! He was happy to accept a $1,000 advance for his latest book, published by Prometheus earlier this year. He will be sharing his experience of the new world of book publishing, from self-publishing to indie presses to the Big Five. In this presentation, any writer with ambitions to see their book in print will learn from Barry's hard-won learning curve, including the pros and cons of self-publishing, how to write a winning proposal, and how to keep that creative spark thriving.

Louisa Rogers, a writer who publishes articles on travel, personal health, and spirituality, began experimenting with watercolors during COVID. She enjoys the way painting draws on a different part of the brain than writing, and she can spend hours lost in color. Louisa combines her two interests by writing a Substack blog on her art process. In this illustrated talk, she'll describe her journey with watercolors and how her painting differs from writing.

Barry Evans is a recovering civil engineer who discovered his knack for teaching and writing about science topics 40 years ago. McGraw-Hill published two of his books in the 1990s, and since then he has self-published over 20 books, including the local best-seller "Humbooks." He has written the Field Notes column for the North Coast Journal since 2008.

A writer and watercolor painter, Louisa Rogers divides her life between Eureka and Guanajuato, Mexico.
