Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Lori Dengler, Emeritus Professor of Geology, Cal Poly Humboldt:
On August 10, 2025, a landslide equivalent to the volume of 25 Giza pyramids slid into Tracy Arm, a glacial fjord south of Juneau, Alaska. The slide displaced water in the fjord that stripped trees and soil to a height of 1,578 feet above the water and now ranks as the second highest tsunami ever well recorded. The tsunami continued to race down the fjord and into the larger Endicott Arm,where is was observed by boaters. Tracy Arm is a popular day tourist destination, but the slide occurred several hours before ships were in the area. Glacial retreat has destabilized the area by both removing the weight restraining slope movement and changing the hydrology. This talk discusses what happened in the Tracy Arm slide and tsunami and the heightened risk of future events.

Lori Dengler is an emeritus professor of geology at Cal Poly Humboldt and an expert in tsunami and earthquake hazards. Since retiring in 2015, she continues to work on North Coast earthquake and tsunami preparedness efforts through the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group and nationally as a member of NOAA’s Tsunami Science Technical Advisory Panel. She writes the weekly “Not My Fault” column in the Times-Standard.
