Behind the Vision: The Bernard Osher Foundation & OLLI at Humboldt

Description

Join us for an engaging presentation exploring the origins of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and the remarkable vision behind it. Learn about Bernard Osher—the philanthropist whose mission to support lifelong learning led to the creation of more than 125 OLLIs across the country. We’ll dive into the goals of the Bernard Osher Foundation, the national OLLI Network, and how OLLI at Humboldt fits into this inspiring legacy. You’ll also hear how our local program is upholding Osher’s vision by providing enriching, inclusive learning experiences for adults 50 and better in our community. Perfect for current members, potential instructors, and anyone curious about the purpose and power of lifelong learning!

Julie Stewart is the new interim program coordinator for OLLI at Humboldt. In her first month, she had the opportunity to attend the national OLLI Conference in Chantilly, Virginia, where she connected with directors and volunteers from OLLIs across the country. The conference provided valuable insight into what drives successful OLLI programs and how each institute fits into the larger vision of the Bernard Osher Foundation. Julie is excited to share what she learned and to explore new ways for community members to get involved in this dynamic and local lifelong learning program.

Julie has lived in Arcata since 2009, when she moved from the Bay Area to attend Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt). She earned her B.S. in 2013 and began her career in education as an environmental educator, working at outdoor science schools throughout California. Since then, she has contributed to a variety of local educational programs, including outdoor adventures with Center Activities and afterschool programming at the Sequoia Park Zoo. Most recently, she taught middle school science in Eureka and began a master’s in education at Cal Poly Humboldt, with plans to graduate in December 2025.

The presentation will begin promptly at noon.
