In the Tradition: Ethnic Music from Around the World
Tues., Sept. 15-29, 5-6:30 p.m.
Time: 5-6:30 p.m.
Location: Online
Cost: $45
With Daniel Chandler, Performer & Radio Host
Ethnic music - culturally significant music generated in communities for their own use in ritual, work, and dance - is a source of the most interesting sounds you may never have heard.
In this course we will listen to different types of music from many cultures over three hour-long sessions. Discussion at each meeting will focus on our own listening experience but will include illustrations of non-western scales, rhythms, and vocal styles.
We may also veer into the philosophical by considering statements such as this provocation by composer Philip Glass: “Over the years and as I ventured further and further away from my musical ‘home base,’ I have come to understand that all music, without exception, is ethnic music.” A discography for the class sessions and resources for further listening will be provided.
Register by 12 p.m., September 12.

Daniel Chandler
Dan Chandler has been a part of the OLLI Book Club since 2016. The club has read many great books since then, and even when books have turned out not to be great -- their discussions are. The group chooses books several months in advance and each reader will have one book chosen from two they suggest.
Dan is also a performer of ethnic music and radio host of an ethnic music show. For 40 years he performed traditional music on violin and gaida (bagpipe) with amateur groups, playing for folk dancers, in coffee shops and at festivals.
In 1992 he started the KHSU program, "In the Tradition," which featured ethnic music from around the world. The show continued for over 25 years.
