Black Liberation Month
SHIFT has allocated the needed funds for both Black Liberation Month 2025 and 2026. The activities throughout this month aim to uphold sustainability through a social justice lens by creating and implementing programming that centers our most marginalized population on campus, those being Black-identified students. Through a month of events and engagement opportunities, we hope to spotlight and uplift our Black-identified student population by keeping the Black experience as the foundation of the ideas we put forward in this project.
Planetary Care for Young Learners
This project focuses on offering young children in the Child Development Laboratory opportunities for engagement with the natural world and the ability to develop an ethic of care for our planet. Children will be able to spend time outdoors and in the Arcata Community Forest no matter the weather, geared up for the elements and ready to observe, interact, and develop an ethos of care for the place they call home.
Library of Things Developing Research
The Library of Things (LoTs) at Cal Poly Humboldt will provide students with access to tools, equipment, and everyday items that are often too expensive or impractical to own individually. By promoting shared use, reuse, and repair, LoTs reduce waste and support a more sustainable, circular economy. In order to figure out how to best implement this project, the SHIFT Committee has funded a student research position for AY 25-26 that will help figure out how best to navigate the logistical concerns that have and will rise with this project.
CCAT Solar Thermal
CCAT’s main house/building structure was relocated during construction of the BSS building and during the relocation of the building structure, an existing solar thermal system had to be removed. Once the relocation effort of the building was completed, HEIF allocated approximately $16,643 to install two new evacuated tube panels on the roof of the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology(CCAT) and data monitoring equipment in order to maintain the pre-existing solar thermal technology.
SoRMS Upgrade- XHEF072
It was in Spring 2008 that RESU proposed to HEIF a request for funding required to complete Phase II of the SoRMS project. To make the system fully compatible with NREL’s MIDC, HEIF approved funding to purchase an ethernet jack to enable remote data acquisition from the station, and to purchase a third pyranometer for the system which will allow RESU to send a pyranometer to NREL for calibration without a disruption in data collection.
IT Server Virtualization
In Spring 2010, HEIF received a proposal to “virtualize” 40 of Humboldt’s computer servers into four newer ones. Rapid advances in computer technology enables this consolidation, and for HEIF the new machines’ increased efficiency and fewer total number results in a net savings of electricity and reduced air conditioning of server rooms.
HArt- XHF009
In 2013, the Humboldt Energy Independence Fund (HEIF) allocated a little over $5,000 to fund HEIF Art (HArt) Day. The primary goal of HArt Day was to generate awareness about issues that HEIF values and to suggest alternative behavior changes that will assist the sustainability development of our campus as well as our planet.
Green Workplace Assessment- XHF010
This project provides funding for Humboldt campus departments/areas/offices that have completed a Green Workplace Assessment with the student group Green campus. Money is intended to fund energy efficient equipment that Green Campus identifies as being outdated or in need of replacement in order to achieve energy savings and energy efficiency. This project was defunded in 2024 because no projects were ever identified as being appropriate for this match funding.
Green Workplace Equipment- XHF021
This project provides LED lamps, autoswitching power strips, and socket timers to individual offices as a part of the Green Campus Green Workplace Assessment process, in order for the campus to gain actual kWh/year savings. This project was defunded in 2024 because small widgets such as LED desk lamps, power strips, and socket timers have not been used in many years and no longer align with campus needs and systems.
Campus Wall- XHF018
The service provides a virtual space for the Humboldt community to list items for sale. Similar to Craigslist, however you must have an Humboldt email to participate. This project was defunded because the company went out of business in 2023.
