Acquisition Information
With permission and trust of Grange President Pete Oringer, Grange member Susie Van Kirk met Edie Butler, archivist at Humboldt State University in 2012, at the grange building. Susie was authorized to facilitate the transfer of historic grange materials to Humboldt State University Library Special Collections. After a review of the boxes and confirmation that the materials did not have current records and did not pertain to grange ceremonies, the five boxes and two plastic tubs were transferred to Humboldt State University Library.
Biographical Information
Bayside Grange No. 500 was organized on October 17, 1932, and received its charter from the National Grange on January 1, 1933. Founded during the resurgence of the Grange Movement in the Great Depression, it served as a subordinate chapter of the Patrons of Husbandry and as an important social and civic institution in the rural community of Bayside, California.
The Grange first met in the old Bayside Community Hall. In 1940, members purchased land on Jacoby Creek Road and began construction of a new hall through volunteer labor and local fundraising. The main hall opened with a public dance on March 1, 1941, and the kitchen and dining wing were completed soon after. Throughout the twentieth century, Bayside Grange sponsored meetings, dances, suppers, youth activities, women’s programs, and other community events, and the hall remained a center of community life in Bayside into the twenty-first century.
Scope and Content
The collection documents the organizational history, administrative activities, and community role of Bayside Grange No. 500 from 1873 to 2006, with the bulk of materials dating from 1932 to 2005. It includes founding documents, bylaws, administrative records, membership records, correspondence, and materials relating to the operation, renovation, and preservation of the Bayside Grange Hall. Also included are publications from the National and California State Granges; ritual manuals; songbooks; records of the Office of the Lecturer; and materials documenting affiliated groups and activities, including the Grange Women’s Association, Home Economics Club, Community Workers Association, Juvenile Grange, and 4-H.
These materials document the evolution of Bayside Grange No. 500 as an agricultural and community organization as well as the broader social history of Bayside and rural Humboldt County.
Arrangement of Collection
The collection is arranged into 8 boxes and multiple series reflecting the functions and activities of Bayside Grange No. 500. Materials are arranged chronologically within series where possible, with some groupings reflecting original order.
