Barnacle Geese Slideshow

This population is one of the most celebrated conservation/management success stories in Europe; up from 300 individuals to over 30,000!

Much like Aleutian Canada geese along the Pacific northwest, barnacle geese feed on prime agricultural land in Scotland.

Geese live together in pairs and family groups within large flocks where they compete for feeding space.

Birds are measured and fitted with coded tarsal bands (Dr. Black -with hat- and colleague Dr. Loonen).

In spring, they stop on remote islands to fatten up for the breeding season.

The geese travel 3000 km to arctic Svalbard to breed and molt.
