Weekend Intensives
Participation in two weekend intensives each semester is mandatory. The two day intensives are designed as community-building events and are critical components to meeting our program's outcomes. During the intensives, students participate in experiential learning through robust dialogue about complex issues, work with their peers on course-related presentations, attend live workshops facilitated by experts in the field, and utilize a variety of learning techniques to promote empathy among diverse populations.
The intensives are held all day Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm twice a semester and attendance is required to pass the course. One intensive weekend is held in-person and the other intensive weekend is held virtually.
Background Check, Drug Screen, and Vaccinations
To meet the requirements of the Nursing Program, students must complete a background check, a 10-panel drug screen, and provide verification of specific vaccinations and insurance. This is done through the Complio system, which students must log into and create a profile.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How many students are in a cohort?
Our average cohort is between 10 and 18 students. You get to know your fellow classmates through collaborative learning experiences. You also get to build relationships with your classmates in the other cohorts through joint activities during the intensive.
I'm finishing my ADN in the spring/summer, can I apply?
Yes! You can apply to the Fall Cohort for the RN-BSN program. Applications are typically open from October to March. Click here for current application deadline information.
I'm not in an ADN program yet, can I apply?
Absolutely! You can apply for our ADN-BSN, also known as our Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP), through one of our community college partners. Scroll down to see a list of our partners.
What is the difference between the ADN-BSN program, CEP, and RN-BSN program?
Great question! Our ADN-BSN program and our Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) are the same thing. The ADN-BSN program is for those in community college looking for a streamlined path to getting their BSN. Working alongside our advisors, we work with you individually to create a plan that works for you. Our RN-BSN program is for registered nurses who are looking to further their education. Whether you choose to join via our ADN-BSN or RN-BSN program, we are committed to supporting you every step of the way.
What is your advice for someone considering nursing as a career?
Identify lower division GE/major requirements and prerequisite courses for ADN and BSN programs. Look at community colleges for ADN catalogs and universities for BSN catalogs. Note: different universities and community colleges might have different requirements. Also look at RN programs and application requirements. Talk to an advisor, we can help you explore options and create a plan to maximize coursework points.
How much of the program is in person/on campus?
Our hybrid program is designed with one mandatory in-person weekend intensive and one virtual weekend intensive per semester. Some housing accommodations are offered to out of the area students for the weekend. The other coursework is done online. The practicum is done in-person with a local health organization near your personal hometown. Our offices are located on the Cal Poly Humboldt campus in the Kinesiology & Athletics building, Room 340. You are always welcome to stop by!
Returning Student or Leave of Absence?
Whether you are a returning student or a student considering a leave of absence, we are here to support you. Connect with eden.donahue@humboldt.edu so we can support you throughout your journey.
A returning student is a student who previously attended Cal Poly Humboldt and is returning after an absence of two or more semesters (*Note this is not the same as students who requested a leave of absence*). The process for returning students differs depending on the length of time gone and eligibility. See How to Return to Humboldt for more information.
Considering a leave of absence? If you have attended Cal Poly Humboldt for at least one semester and need to take a pause from the program but plan on returning within two years, we highly recommend taking a leave of absence. Taking a leave of absence will avoid the re-application process and will safeguard your catalog rights. See Leave of Absence (Educational Leave) for more information.
