Send Messages Using Canvas Gradebook or New Analytics

Introduction

You can use either the Gradebook or New Analytics to send feedback, messages, or reminders to students based on their assignment score or status.

Send Messages with Canvas Gradebook

Tutorial

How to message students using gradebook in Canvas from Bhavani Kola on YouTube

You can use the Message Students Who option in the Canvas Gradebook to contact students. Message subjects are filtered based on specific assignment categories:

  • Haven't submitted yet—students who haven't submitted the assignment, even if they have been manually awarded a grade.
  • Haven't been graded—students whose assignments have not yet been graded (submitted or unsubmitted).
  • Scored less than [point value]—students who earned a grade on their assignment less than X number of points.
  • Scored more than [point value]—students who earned a grade on their assignment more than X number of points.

This allows you to reach out to multiple students with one message based on the above criteria, although to students, it will look like you reached out to each of them individually. In a large class, this is a great way to reach out to students who are missing assignments to remind them to turn them in, or contact you if they need assistance.

Send Messages with New Analytics

Using the Message Student Who Feature in New Analytics to Send Targeted Messages in Canvas from Ben Whitmore on YouTube

You can use the Message Students Who option in New Analytics to contact students. To open New Analytics, click the New Analytics link in Course Navigation or click the New Analytics button on the Course Home Page.

Note: If you cannot view the New Analytics link, you may have to make the link visible via the Navigation tab in Course Settings.

To view course grade analytics, click the Course Grade tab. If you want to filter analytics for a specific assignment, section, or student, search for and select the intended filter in the Filter field. Then click the Message icon.

The Message Students Who window has three tabs which represent different criteria:

  • Score Range—which allows you to message students based on a specific current grade percentage range in the course
  • Missing—which allows you to message students whose submission status for an assignment is missing.
  • Late—which allows you to message students whose submission status for an assignment is late.

Much like with the Canvas Gradebook, this allows you to reach out to multiple students with one message based on the above criteria, although to students, it will look like you reached out to each of them individually.
