Student/Alumni Highlights
Jackson Stillman (Physics, class of 2019)
Jackson Stillman was once a scholar here at Humboldt who, through dedication and passion, extended his talents abroad. By recommendation of his research advisor, he was given a travel grant to personally present their National Science Foundation-funded program research to the American Physical Society 2019. Research was on, “essentially a test of the inverse square law of gravity at very small length scales.”
Because he dared to take a chance on himself, he received the opportunity to tour NASA's exhibitor booth, a visit to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and to NIST in Boulder, where Stillman was able to get up close and personal with the lab’s atomic clock. “My dad is a clock and watch repairman,” he says. “I’m a clock guy’s son, and I got to see the most accurate clock in the world.” This was the most exciting part for Stillman.
He began in Humboldt, left to University of California, Santa Barbara for year and returned to Humboldt. He completed a semester at College of The Redwoods and transferred to Humboldt State to complete four-year degree in physics. His journey has been a long yet fulfilling. Set his sights on an applied physics master’s degree from the University of Oregon, but COVID disrupted the program so began tutoring students via Zoom from home in Humboldt. Now Jackson teaches at schools in McKinleyville and in Thailand during the summer. He enjoys keeping updated on the latest in APS News and sharing information with his students. Stillman is a life-long scholar who values education
