Internship Opportunities
USPHS Commissioned Corps
COSTEP
The US Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps COSTEP Internship application period for Summer 2027 is now open from July 1 through September 18, accepting the first 250 applications
Majors: environmental health, engineering, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, dental hygiene, dietetics, medical laboratory technology, medical record administration, or occupational, physical, or respiratory therapy.
Both undergraduate and graduate opportunities available.
Indian Health Services
One of the largest agencies supported by USPHS is the Indian Health Service (IHS). IHS hosts a monthly virtual employment information session for engineers on the last Thursday of each month. IHS as an excellent place for new graduates to gain engineering experience, develop design skills needed for the Professional Engineer (PE) license, receive extensive training and field exposure, and access opportunities not typically available in private or other public sector roles.

Think Wild's Beaver Works Oregan
Think Wild’s Beaver Works program offers beaver habitat internships during the winter, spring, and fall. The intern will assist the Beaver Works Program Manager with efforts pertaining to beaver-related education, outreach, and habitat project planning and execution. The focal areas include conducting literature reviews, writing scientific outreach for broad audiences, supporting beaver site assessments and planting preparation (willow and cottonwood harvest and storage), researching best practices for riparian restoration methodology, monitoring remote trail camera footage, habitat planting coordination, organizing community science events, contributing to a better understanding of human dimensions of wildlife coexistence, and more.
Internship seasons are
- Winter – February to April
- Spring – May to July
Fall – September to November (start and end dates somewhat flexible).

What to expect:
Intern is responsible for three 8-hour shifts per week.
This is an unpaid position, but a $1,000 stipend
Think Wild merchandise (hat and t-shirts), and a letter of recommendation (upon request) will be provided upon successful completion of the internship.

Oregan Department of Fish and Wildlife
ODFW Wildlife Student Internship Program
The ODFW wildlife intern program provides valuable training experiences to college students entering the field of wildlife management, while assisting with a variety of headquarters and district activities. Interns assist wildlife area, habitat crew, headquarters, and district wildlife staff performing daily management activities such as population surveys, wildlife captures, and responding to public inquiries. Interns may also participate in the wolf management program, wildlife research program, and conservation strategy implementation.
Most internships occur during the summer quarter, which in Oregon is mid-June to mid-September. However, depending on need, internships can start as early as May, and they may occasionally be offered in the fall as well. Internships are 400 hours (10 weeks or 2.3 months) in duration. The position is classified as a Student Professional/Technical Worker (0150) with an hourly rate range of $19.77 – $22.23. Note: this position will receive a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase of 2.5% which is not reflected in the salary listed in this posting. The effective date of the increase is February 1, 2026.In some cases, temporary housing is provided.

Student Research Internship in Offshore Wind

About the internship
The Schatz Energy Research Center has an opening for an undergraduate student research intern to join our offshore wind team on a project developing entanglement mitigation strategies for offshore wind turbines. This paid internship is expected to start in October 2026 and continue through the Spring 2027 semester. The internship is supported by the Philip & Yuriko Anton Climate Endowment.
As a student research intern, you will support our ongoing mooring line entanglement research. A significant portion of the project development has been completed, with important work remaining to support system integration, analysis, documentation, and final reporting. You will contribute to this phase of the project by helping develop technical reports and communication materials, organizing and interpreting research results, and supporting other project activities as needed.
Position at a Glance
This is a hybrid based position based in Arcata, CA, participants must be willing to commit 8-10 flexible hours weekly and pay will be given in the form of a $5,000 stipend. Pay will be monthly and released via student's university account.

Minimum qualifications
• Must be undergraduate students in good academic standing at Cal Poly Humboldt who are registered for at least 6.0 units in Fall 2026.
• Experience using quantitative or computational methods, gained through academic coursework, projects, research, work experience, or other activities.

Volunteer Opportunities
Dune Ecosystem Restoration Team
Add gloves, shovels, and brush axes to human hands, and you have the strongest dune restoration tool around. You can make a difference in the ecosystem, one invasive plant removal at a time. Within months of initially removing invasive plants, volunteers witness native plants re-sprouting on their own. No experience is necessary. We will have snacks and tools to share. No need to reserve a spot, meet us at the specified locations a few minutes before 10 am. Training, camaraderie, and beautiful scenery are provided.
DERT meets two times a month:
Every second Saturday of the month from 10 am to 1 pm
Every third Sunday of the month from 10 am to 1 pm

Field Trip Guide
Volunteers are needed to lead K-12 students in a guided exploration of coastal environments. Through hands-on activities and educational games, environmental education volunteers teach kids about native dunes plants, habitat restoration, salt marsh ecology, animal tracking, bird watching, freshwater invertebrates, dune geology, and human history. Field trips take place on Fridays during the spring and fall. No experience is necessary, just a desire to share nature with young students and to learn more about our coastal environments.

Animal Care Volunteer

The new CHAT volunteer program might be for you!
Community Hosted Animal Talks is a NEW interpretive opportunity for volunteers to CHAT with Zoo guests about animals' incredible adaptations and survival strategies using scientific replica skulls and other biofacts.
CHAT runs from April through September, with mandatory program training throughout February and March.

California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program
Volunteer anglers are essential to the success of CCFRP! With help from the angling community, we have been able to successfully complete over a decade of data collection to generate estimates of relative abundance, length frequencies, biomass, diversity, community composition, and movements of nearshore fishes in and around MPAs across California. We’ve got the boat, the gear, and the plan…all we need is you!

Letters to a Pre-Scientist
What is Letters to a Pre-Scientist (LPS)?
Letters to a Pre-Scientist is a nonprofit organization that connects middle school students, primarily in rural and underserved communities, with STEM professionals through handwritten letters. The program helps students learn about STEM careers, demystifies science, and encourages them to see themselves in STEM fields.
Who can volunteer?
Faculty, graduate students, researchers, and other STEM professionals are encouraged to participate.
Time commitment:
Approximately 10–15 hours over the course of the academic year.
