Ensemble Requirements

Trumpet

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

•  Play trumpet in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted Ensemble (Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony, or Intermediate Orchestra)
• Complete at least one semester of a Jazz Ensemble (Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra)
• Complete at least one semester of Chamber Music (preferably) or an additional semester of a Jazz Ensemble (Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra)
•  Complete at least one semester of  Mariachi de Humboldt or an additional semester of Brass Chamber Music, or an additional semester of a Jazz Ensemble (Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, Jazz Orchestra)
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least two semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of a Jazz Ensemble (Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, Jazz Orchestra)
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music
• Complete at least two semesters of a vocal ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of Mariachi de Humboldt
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• A conducted ensemble on your instrument every semester
• At least four semesters chosen from chamber music, jazz ensembles, or Mariachi de Humboldt
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra on a Techniques Class instrument
• At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible)
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve trumpet - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion

Trombone

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Play trombone in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted Ensemble (Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony, or Intermediate Orchestra)
• Complete at least one semester of a Jazz Ensemble (Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra)
• Complete at least one semester of Chamber Music (preferably) or an additional semester of a Jazz Ensemble (Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra)
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music

Horn

• Complete at least five semesters of a conducted Ensemble Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony, or Intermediate Orchestra)
• Complete at least two semesters of Chamber Music
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music
• Complete at least two semesters of a vocal ensemble
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended: for Music Teacher Preparation:

• A conducted ensemble on your instrument every semester
• At least four semesters of chamber music and/or jazz ensembles
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra or Mariachi de Humboldt on guitar or  a Techniques Class instrument
• At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible)
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve horn - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Mariachi de Humboldt

Tuba 

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Play tuba in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least four semesters of a conducted Ensemble (Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony, or Intermediate Orchestra)
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation
• Experience in a Chamber Ensemble is strongly encouraged.

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration 

• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music
• Complete at least two semesters of a vocal ensemble
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• A conducted ensemble on your instrument every semester
• At least four semesters of chamber music and/or jazz ensembles
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra or Mariachi de Humboldt on guitar or  a Techniques Class instrument
• At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible)
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve tuba - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Mariachi de Humboldt

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon 

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Play flute, oboe, clarinet, or bassoon in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least four semesters of a conducted Ensemble (Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony, or Intermediate Orchestra)
• Complete at least two semesters of Chamber Music
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music
• Complete at least two semesters of a vocal ensemble
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended: for Music Teacher Preparation:

• A conducted ensemble on your instrument every semester
• At least four semesters of chamber music and/or jazz ensembles
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra or Mariachi de Humboldt on guitar or  a Techniques Class instrument
• At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible)
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve woodwind instruments - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Mariachi de Humboldt

Saxophone 

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Play saxophone in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least four semesters of a conducted Ensemble (either Wind Ensemble or Intermediate Orchestra)
• Complete at least one semester of Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra
• Complete at least one semester of Chamber Music (preferably) or Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music
• Complete at least two semesters of a vocal ensemble
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• A conducted ensemble on your instrument every semester
• At least four semesters of chamber music and/or jazz ensembles
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra or Mariachi de Humboldt on guitar or  a Techniques Class instrument
• At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible)
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve saxophone - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Mariachi de Humboldt

Percussion 

Music Studies or Applied Music Concentration

• Play percussion in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least four semesters of Percussion Ensemble
• Complete at least two semesters of Wind Ensemble or Humboldt Symphony
• Complete at least two semesters of Calypso Band, World Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra
• Complete a minimum of eight semesters of ensemble participation

Recommended Ensembles for Applied Music students:

• At least four semesters of Wind Ensemble or Humboldt Symphony
• At least four semesters of Calypso Band, World Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Play percussion in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio
• lessons.
• Complete at least two semesters of Wind Ensemble or Humboldt Symphony
• Complete at least two  semesters of Percussion Ensemble
• Complete at least two semesters of Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra
• Complete at least one semester of Calypso Band or World Percussion Ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of a vocal ensemble. 
• Complete a minimum of eight semesters of ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• Play percussion in Wind Ensemble or Humboldt Symphony every semester
• At least four semesters of Percussion Ensemble, Calypso Band, or jazz ensembles
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra or Mariachi de Humboldt on guitar or  a Techniques Class instrument
• At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible)
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve percussion - Musical Theatre/Opera, Mariachi de Humboldt

Piano

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Complete at least three semesters singing, playing piano, and/or playing another instrument in a conducted Ensemble (Humboldt Chorale, University Singers, Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony.)
• Complete at least three semesters of accompanying
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted vocal Ensemble (Humboldt Chorale, University Singers, Madrigal Singers)
• Complete at least one semester of accompanying
• At least two semesters of a jazz ensemble (MRT, Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra)
• Complete at least two semesters playing piano or another instrument in a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra (on a “Families” instrument), Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony.)
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• At least four semesters of chamber music and/or jazz ensembles
• As many semesters as possible of Intermediate Orchestra or Mariachi de Humboldt on guitar or  a Techniques Class instrument
• More vocal ensembles (of as much variety as possible)
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve piano  - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Mariachi de Humboldt

Violin, Viola 

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Play violin or viola in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least five semesters of a conducted Ensemble (either Humboldt Symphony or Intermediate Orchestra)
• Complete at least two semesters of Chamber Music
•  In addition to the requirements stated above, complete at least one additional semester of ensemble participation chosen from Humboldt Symphony, Intermediate Orchestra, Chamber Music, or Mariachi de Humboldt.
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration  

• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music
• Complete at least one semester of a vocal ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of Mariachi de Humboldt
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• A conducted ensemble on your instrument every semester
• At least three semesters of chamber music.
• More jazz ensembles.  
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra or AM Jazz Band on a Techniques Class instrument  
•  At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible) 
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve violin or viola  - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion.

Cello 

Music Studies or Applied Music Concentration

• Play cello in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least five semesters of a conducted Ensemble (either Humboldt Symphony or Intermediate Orchestra)
• Complete at least two semesters of Chamber Music
•  In addition to the requirements stated above, complete at least one additional semester of ensemble participation chosen from Humboldt Symphony, Intermediate Orchestra, or Chamber Music
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration  

• Complete at least three semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
•  Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music
• Complete at least one semester of a vocal ensemble
• In addition to the requirements stated above, complete at least one additional semester of ensemble participation chosen from Humboldt Chorale, University Singers, Madrigal Singers, or Mariachi de Humboldt
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• A conducted ensemble on your instrument every semester
• At least three  semesters of chamber music 
• At least two semesters of jazz ensembles. 
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra or AM Jazz Band on a Techniques Class instrument  
• At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible)
• Play violin in Mariachi de Humboldt for as many semesters as possible
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve cello  - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Mariachi de Humboldt

String Bass 

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Play Bass in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least four  semesters of a conducted Ensemble (either Humboldt Symphony, Intermediate Orchestra, or Wind Ensemble)
• Complete at least two semesters of Chamber Music, Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least three  semesters of a conducted instrumental Ensemble (Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble
• Complete at least one semester of chamber music or a third semester of a jazz ensemble.
• Complete at least two semesters of a vocal ensemble
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• A conducted ensemble on your instrument every semester
• At least four semesters of chamber music and/or jazz ensembles
• At least one semester of Intermediate Orchestra or Mariachi de Humboldt on guitar or  a Techniques Class instrument
• At least four semesters of vocal ensembles (with as much variety as possible)
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve bass  - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Mariachi de Humboldt

Guitar 

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Complete at least two semesters of a conducted Ensemble (Humboldt Chorale, University Singers, or Ensembles on other Instruments – Intermediate Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Humboldt Symphony)
• Complete at least two semesters of Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, Jazz Orchestra, or Mariachi de Humboldt
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least two semesters of a conducted vocal Ensemble (Humboldt Chorale, University Singers,)
• Complete at least one semester of Guitar Ensemble or other Chamber Ensemble
• Complete at least two semesters of a jazz ensemble (MRT, Jazz Combos, A.M. Jazz, or Jazz Orchestra)
• Complete at least one semester of Mariachi de Humboldt
• Complete at least two semesters playing an instrument (possibly a Techniques Class instrument) other than guitar in Intermediate Orchestra, Humboldt Symphony, or Wind Ensemble
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation::

• At least five semesters of a conducted vocal Ensemble
• At least four semesters of chamber music and/or jazz ensembles
• More semesters of Intermediate Orchestra on a Techniques Class instrument
• At least three semesters of Mariachi de Humboldt
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve guitar - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Humboldt Symphony, Wind Ensemble

Voice 

Music Studies or Applied Music  Concentration

• Sing in an ensemble every semester during which you take studio lessons.
• Complete at least three semesters of University Singers or Humboldt Chorale
• Complete at least one semester of Mad River Transit
• Complete at least one semester of Opera Workshop
• Complete at least one semester of Mariachi de Humboldt or an additional (4th) semester of University Singers,Humboldt Chorale or Opera Workshop
• Complete a minimum of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Applied Music: 

• Additional semesters of Opera Workshop, including participation in the Musical
• At least semester in a non-vocal ensemble

Music Teacher Preparation Concentration

• Complete at least three semesters of University Singers or Humboldt Chorale
• Complete at least one semester of Mad River Transit 
• Complete at least one semester of Opera Workshop
• Complete at least one semester of Mariachi de Humboldt, Madrigals or an additional (4th) semester of University Singers or Humboldt Chorale 
• Complete at least two semesters of Intermediate Orchestra (on a Techniques Class instrument), Humboldt Symphony, or Wind Ensemble
• Complete a total of 8 semesters of Ensemble participation

Recommended for Music Teacher Preparation:

• Six semesters of University Singers or Humboldt Chorale 
• At least two semesters of  MRT
• More Intermediate Orchestra on your weakest instrument from Techniques Classes
• At least two semesters of Opera Workshop including participation in a Musical.  
• At least two semesters of Mariachi de Humboldt 
• Performance in or substantial rehearsal observation of ensembles that don’t involve voice - Musical Theatre/Opera, Calypso Band, World Percussion, Mariachi de Humboldt, Humboldt Symphony, Wind Ensemble
