Nicolette Amann and Jessica Citti
English
Nicolette Amann (English Department Faculty & Redwood Writing Project Director) and Jessica Citti (Writing Specialist & Writing Studio Coordinator in the Learning Center) co-led a session called “When Outsourcing Writing is Outsourcing Learning: The Impact of GenAI on Writing Development" at the Humboldt County Office of Education Day of Learning on October 27, 2025. This AI-themed professional development conference was attended by over 150 Humboldt County K–12 teachers, instructional staff, and administrators.
Janelle Adsit
English
Janelle Adsit was accepted to the Global Arts in Medicine Fellowship, founded in Nigeria in 2018. As part of the 2024 cohort, she will collaborate with colleagues from 36 countries to pilot new programs that utilize the arts to support health justice and community wellbeing. Projects will be presented at the upcoming Global Arts in Health Festival. https://artsinmedicinefellowship.org/
Nicolette Amann

Nicolette Amann, Lecturer in English, who coordinates the Redwood Writing Project for local Humboldt teachers, and Anne Hartline from the School of Education facilitated a year-long professional development program on the untold local histories of Humboldt County and California. This project resulted in multiple sharable lessons that have been published at the National Writing Project site. Various CAHSS faculty presented as part of the program:

Humboldt's First Year Composition Program Faculty has received the CCCC's Certificate of Writing Program Excellence. They are recognized for their long-term dedication to co-create the program around research and best practices for first-year writing instruction and to provide professional development leadership across campus. CCCC will present our program with a certificate at the award presentation of the 2024 CCCC Annual Convention in Spokane, Washington, on Friday, April 4, at 6 p.m.
Sarah Ben-Zvi
English
Sarah Ben-Zvi has worked to support local high school teachers in developing meaningful writing and literacy curricula, coordinated the annual Redwood Writing Contest for students in grades 3-12, and dedicated herself to first-year composition students. Sarah has been invited to accept the 2024 Classroom Excellence Award from the California Association of Teachers of English at the annual CATE convention in Los Angeles.

Marcos Hernandez and Janelle Adsit have published an essay that reflects on Cal Poly Humboldt's literary magazine *Toyon: Multilingual Journal of Literature and Art.* Their chapter, "Literary Journals, Editorial Courses, and Equity in the Publishing Industry," appears in the collection *Creative Writing Scholars on the Publishing Trade* (edited by Sam Meekings and Marshall Moore; published in the Routledge series Studies in Creative Writing, 2022).

Nicolette Amann has been awarded $27,000 in funding from the University of California Office of the President to support a variety of literacy-focused professional development programs for local K-16 educators.
Nikola Hobbel
English
Dr. Nikola Hobbel's co-edited collection titled *Social Justice Pedagogy Across the Curriculum: The Practice of Freedom* has been released from Routledge in a second edition. Co-edited by Cal Poly English Professor Nikola Hobbel and Thandeka K. Chapman, the book takes up the question: "What knowledge and tools do pre- and in-service educators need to teach for and about social justice across the curriculum in K-12 classrooms?" The collection synthesizes historical foundations, philosophic/theoretical conceptualizations, and applications of social justice education in public school classrooms. That the book is released in second edition is indicative of its significance in the field.
Linda Kuckuk

Linda J. Kuckuk (graduate student, M.A. English, Applied English Studies) is presenting a paper titled "Interwoven Stories/Embroidered Identity" at the 119th Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA) Conference in November 2022. The conference theme is "Geographies of the Fantastic and the Quotidian." Linda's presentation will be part of a session on ideas about "Auto/biography."
Mary Lipiec

Mary Lipiec, graduate M.A. student in English, presented at the SPARK conference in New York City. Mary is researching representations of autism in literature for the culminating M.A. project in English.
