Daniel DeArmond

After graduating, Daniel worked in the California timber industry as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) preparing timber harvest plans (THPs). In 2015, he moved to Manaus, Brazil, and studied Brazilian Portuguese to prepare for the entrance exam at the National Institute for Research in the Amazon (INPA). Once successfully passing the exam, he entered the postgraduate program for tropical forest science (CFT) and completed all requirements to receive an MSc (2018) and Ph.D. (2023). His Ph.D. thesis is titled "Impacts and Recovery after soil compaction from logging machinery in Central Amazonia."

Currently employed by Parsons Corporation at Fort Bliss, Texas as the Program Manager for the Integrated Training Area Management(ITAM)Program. Our program focuses on erosion and sediment control, native grass re-seeding, vegetation monitoring, maneuver trail maintenance and reconfiguration, protection of sites both of cultural and biological significance and education to our Military on the importance of being good stewards of the 1500 square miles of training land that encompasses Fort Bliss.

Rion Allbaugh, 2001 Forestry, met his wife Anne Marie Nielsen (‘01, Child Development) in the Siemens Hall Computer lab in 1999 and have been together ever since. Allbaugh is a Fire Captain for Cal Fire, and Anne Marie is a second grade teacher. They live in the Sierra Nevada Foothills with their son and dog. They look back upon their Humboldt State experience with great nostalgia and, if given the opportunity, would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Drew Coe, Forestry & Wildland Resources, 1996, began working in the forest industry following graduation. After several years he returned to school, graduating with a MS in Watershed Science from Colorado State University. Coe currently works as the Forest Practice Monitoring Coordinator/Hydrologist in CALFIRE's Watershed Protection Program. He lives with his wife and two children in Redding, California.

Tyler Smurr worked for Sierra Pacific Industries for two years after graduation and then moved to Texas to get married and start a family. He went back to school and got his masters in Education Leadership and Policy Studies. He is currently a Vice Principal at an Elementary school in San Antonio, Texas.

Tyler Smurr, Forestry & Wildland Resources, 1995, worked for Sierra Pacific Industries after graduating from Humboldt State but then met a girl and followed her to Texas. He taught middle school science for 14 years, and is currently an Assistant Principal for a San Antonio Middle School. Smurr says he uses his experience at Humboldt State to talk to students about finding the right place for them and seeing the beauty in the world.
Janelle Thompson

In 2019, after 28 years with the U.S. Forest Service in a position as a timber sale administrator, Janelle Thompson, Forestry & Wildland Resources, 1993, was promoted to Tahoe National Forest, Sierraville Ranger District Timber Management Officer. Thompson began her career in 1987 as a temporary employee on the timber marking crew at Sierraville. She received a permanent career appointment in 1991 as a forester with an emphasis in timber sale administration. During the last 20 years she has also worked as a support dispatcher (EDSD) for major wildland fires and other incidents across the United States. September of 2022 Thompson will be eligible to retire with over 31 years with the U.S. Forest Service.
