Get Involved
Get involved in Geography through student organizations, research opportunities, and professional resources that connect classroom learning to community, fieldwork, and future careers. Whether you want to build friendships, gain experience, contribute to faculty projects, or explore geography beyond campus, there are many ways to take part.
Humboldt Geographic Society
The Humboldt Geographic Society builds community and fosters a deeper understanding of Humboldt County's landscapes and communities. Opportunities for community involvement, leadership positions, event organization, film screenings, speaker invitations, and socializing are abundant.

Research Opportunities
Participate in faculty research across varying human, physical, and geospatial projects. Opportunities could include fieldwork, creative design and cartographic production, conference presentations, and co-authored publications. See weekly department emails or reach out to faculty for details.
GIS Day
Participate in our annual GIS Day Conference at the Cal Poly Humboldt Library. Held during Geography Awareness Week every fall, this event features invited speakers, hands-on demonstrations, a student poster session, GeoGuessr games, and a map giveaway.
Study Abroad
We encourage our majors to study abroad, to explore and experience other countries and cultures. The Cal Poly Humboldt Study Abroad office can help you explore faculty-led programs, bilateral exchanges, and CSU International Programs.
California Geographical Society
Every spring, we take students to the California Geographical Society Annual Conference to present original research and cartographic works, network with geographers across the state, and to gain a deeper appreciation of the discipline. Cal Poly Humboldt Geographers frequently win statewide awards for research papers, posters, and map design.

Geography is an excellent discipline for students interested in the Peace Corps because it helps them understand the relationships between people, places, cultures, environments, and development challenges. Through fieldwork, spatial analysis, and community-based learning, geography students build practical skills for working across cultures and supporting locally informed solutions.
Cal Poly Humboldt offers a Peace Corp Prep Certificate that pairs well with a Geography major
IdeaFest is an annual showcase of research and creative projects by Cal Poly Humboldt Students. Taking place in the library, the event features research posters, performances, and creative projects from students across campus, with opportunities for further engagement and publication.
Professional Geographic Organizations are great places to find jobs, search for graduate programs, and connect with fellow geographers at statewide and national conferences. Student travel and participation are encouraged and supported by the department.
