Description

Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Sarah Landis, PT, DPT, WCS/Biomechanics Lab Manager/Lecturer, & Justis Ortega, Interim Dean, College of Professional Studies, Cal Poly Humboldt:

Join the Cal Poly Humboldt Fall Risk Program for an engaging discussion of our ongoing research and community partnerships focused on promoting healthy aging in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. This presentation will explore findings from our studies examining how structured exercise programs and everyday physical activity influence balance, mobility, and fall risk among older adults. We will also share how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping is helping us better understand community engagement, identify gaps in access to fall prevention services, and strengthen partnerships across the region. Learn how this collaborative work is improving the health and independence of older adults while providing meaningful research and hands-on learning opportunities for Cal Poly Humboldt students.

Sarah Landis, PT, MS, WCS, is a pelvic floor physical therapist. After completing her undergrad and masters at Humboldt, she went on to complete her doctorate in physical therapy at University of St Augustine. Sarah then returned to Humboldt County and has been practicing physical therapy for 10 years. Sarah earned her Women’s certified Specialist designation in 2022. She runs her own private physical therapy practice called Axis Physical Therapy.

She is also the director of the Biomechanics Lab and a lecturer at Cal Poly Humboldt. As the biomechanics lab director, she works to help students and community members learn about the limits of stability and how we can decrease falls in our community.

Her research is centered around rural fall risk and helping seniors stay independent for as long as possible.

Justis Ortega is the interim dean for the College of Professional Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt.
