Growing and Harvesting Native Plants for Food

Fri., March 20 & 27, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Time: 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Cost: $60

With Gretchen Ziegler, & Monty Caid, Native Plant Enthusiasts

This two part course will introduce students to a variety of edible plants native to our region, how to grow or sustainably harvest them, and sample a variety of foods prepared from them, including bay leaf ice cream, manzanita cider, miners lettuce salad, elderberry elixir and acorn bread. The second class will be a tour of Lost Foods Nursery at Redwood Acres in Eureka, where a variety of mature food species are cultivated.

Registration opens for OLLI members on Feb. 3. Non-members may register starting Feb. 9.

Gretchen Ziegler led the Sequoia Park Zoo for 27 years. In her final years as zoo director, she implemented the zoo’s Native Plant Initiative, which has been slowly converting the zoo’s landscaping to mostly natives, in support of local biodiversity. Learning about this region’s abundant native foods, she enthusiastically grows and harvests and cooks with our native bounty.
