Mental Health Care
Mental Health Care at SHWS
We offer several services that support the mental health of our students. If you are experiencing problems with anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, disordered eating, or other mental health related issues, please consider the options below.
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS)
Mental health clinicians (psychologists, Licensed & Associate Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed & Associate Social Workers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, and therapists-in-training) are available for a variety of services, including same-day urgent sessions, single and ongoing individual psychotherapy session/s, education, outreach, and group services. To learn more, please see the CAPS website. CAPS has two locations: the Student Health & Counseling (SHC) building [off Library Circle], and Behavioral & Social Services (BSS) 208. CAPS can be reached at 707.826.3236 or 707.826.3921.
- TalkNow through TimelyCare: regularly enrolled students can access a therapist for immediate help 24/7. Make sure to register at TimelyCare and you will be able to schedule and participate in a telehealth session anytime.
Student Medical Services
Medication Consults are available for those who are interested in pharmacotherapy such as the use of antidepressants, anti-anxiety agents, and/or mood stabilizers to treat psychiatric and other associated medical conditions. Please note, we are unable to prescribe medications that are classified as stimulants (which are sometimes prescribed for conditions like ADHD). Our medical providers, including a psychiatrist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner, can provide consultations, prescriptions, and ongoing care. Students with complex and/or chronic psychiatric conditions may require referral to more specialized or intensive psychiatric care off-campus.
If you would like to schedule a mental health visit with our medical team, please call 707.826.3146 and ask to schedule a mental health related visit. It is important that enough time is available to thoroughly discuss your concerns and to understand your history, so we discourage use of our same-day service department. Please schedule an appointment unless it is an urgent matter (e.g., a sudden and disturbing change that requires prompt attention and/or there is an imminent safety risk).
Health Education Services
Our Peer Health Educators (PHEs) offer educational services that help support your mental health and wellbeing. Services range from large scale events to smaller scale workshops as well as individual meetings. Content includes sexual health, information and harm reduction strategies in relation to alcohol and other drugs, and mental health and wellness (including strategies for good sleep), etc. Ask about these services: peerhealth@humboldt.edu or call 707.826.5233. Office hours and events are posted on our PHE Instagram page.
