Please select the recruitment type below for more information about the recruitment and onboarding process.
Formal Faculty Recruitment Processes
A formal recruitment is the process used to hire tenure-track, visiting, or full-time temporary faculty at Cal Poly Humboldt. This process is required when hiring for positions that are expected to be ongoing, full-time, or competitively advertised across a broad pool of candidates.
Formal recruitments involve:
- Forming a search committee with an Equity Advocate
- Developing and reviewing a vacancy announcement
- Advertising the position widely
- Interviewing qualified applicants
- Making a final recommendation for hire
This process ensures we maintain equity, transparency, and compliance with CSU policies and collective bargaining agreements.
Temporary Faculty Pool Hiring
The Temporary Faculty Pool is an open and ongoing recruitment used to identify qualified applicants for part-time or short-term faculty appointments at Cal Poly Humboldt. These pools are maintained by APS for each academic year and allow departments to hire lecturers as instructional needs arise.
Pool hires are typically used to cover:
- Single-term assignments (e.g., one class in Fall)
- Part-time instructional needs (less than 15 WTUs)
- Last-minute vacancies or enrollment-based additions
- Sabbatical or leave replacements, if applicable
Academic Student Employee Recruitment (Unit 11)
Academic Student Employees (ASEs) are graduate or undergraduate students hired to support instruction in roles such as:
- Instructional Student Assistants (ISAs)
- Graduate Assistants (GAs)
- Teaching Associates (TAs)
These positions fall under the Unit 11 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and are represented by UAW Local 4123.
The hiring process for Unit 11 positions ensures compliance with CSU policy, collective bargaining rules, and employment eligibility requirements.
Research Associate, Faculty Associate, and Adjunct Professor Appointments
Appointments for Research Associates, Faculty Associates, and Adjunct Faculty are processed outside of formal faculty recruitments or temporary faculty pools. These roles support the university’s academic mission through grant-funded research, special instructional assignments, or non-traditional academic work.
These classifications are governed by the Faculty Handbook and may be used under specific circumstances:
- Research Associate: Is a productive researcher or grant-funded collaborator who contributes to campus research efforts, often with external support.
Faculty Handbook – Section 504 - Adjunct Professor: Is a professional affiliated with an agency connected to the university or someone volunteering specialized expertise to support instruction.
Faculty Handbook – Section 502 - Faculty Associate: Is a distinguished scholar who temporarily affiliates with Cal Poly Humboldt to contribute to the advancement of learning through collaboration.
