Clubs and Organizations

School of Engineering students actively participate in service learning projects and volunteering to work on local, national, and global issues. The department has five active clubs that expand your horizons while providing a fun social atmosphere.

* For up-to-date information on club meeting times and contacts, please check the SoE Virtual Fishbowl Canvas site. You may also find information about club meetings and events on the SoE Events Calendar.

ASCE raises funds for student events, organizes student social activities, and works with all other engineering clubs. ASCE members may become student members of the American Society of Civil Engineers. All ERE students are members of ASCE.

Meetings: Bi-weekly Tuesdays, 12pm, AMH 23
Advisor: Tesfa Yacob and Maysam Mousaviraad

Established: 1975

New officers are elected at the end of spring semesters.

Club History

NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) is a national student organization that works to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. Even though the name mentions Engineers, it is open to all STEM majors. As a newer student branch at Cal Poly Humboldt, NSBE is creating a community of students who support each other to excel in their studies and network for meaningful job opportunities and professional development.

The purpose of the Renewable Energy Student Union (RESU) is to facilitate more renewable energy related activities for the Environmental Resources Engineering program. RESU students have worked with the Schatz Energy Research Center to develop a docent program where ERE students teach local school children about renewable energy and installed a solar radiation monitoring station on the library roof. RESU draws members from both undergraduate ERE students and environmental systems graduate students.

Meetings: Wednesday 12-1 and Sundays 12-1 for project time, HGH 23

School of Engineering Student Association (SoESA) is the engineering club for all engineering majors at Cal Poly Humboldt. Formerly known as the Environmental Resources Engineering Student Association (ERESA). We are the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter, as well as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) student chapter at Cal Poly Humboldt. Our mission is to foster professional development and build a strong engineering community. Each year, we organize events and fundraisers to support student participation in professional activities, such as the ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Water Treatment Competition.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is a national organization that is at the forefront of advancing Hispanic individuals in the STEM fields--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The SHPE-Humboldt club focuses on academic excellence and professional development. Other activities include community outreach and cooperating with other clubs. SHPE-Humboldt is not exclusive to Hispanic people and welcomes individuals of all backgrounds to join.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) mission is to stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity. SWE plans events that inspire young girls to become involved in science and math. SWE welcomes all students to become members.

Jeffrey S. Navarro Mentorship Program

With this mentorship program, the memory of Jeffrey S. Navarro will help more students obtain their bachelors degree in Environmental Resources Engineering. The program supports 2-3 ERE students per year to serve as mentors to their peers.

Competitions

Each year, Engineering students participate in numerous local, regional, national and international competitions. Some of these competitions are described below.

The Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) and the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) are sponsored by The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP). Over the years ERE students have successfully competed in these international competitions. The students have 4 days to complete the research, calculations and writing needed to create a report describing their solution to the problem posed by COMAP. Reports are rated to be Outstanding, Meritorious, Honorable Mention and Successful Participant.

More about the Math Modeling Competitions & Participants

Each year, the North Coast Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) sponsors a design competition limited to ERE students. The design problem is usually a local environmental engineering challenge. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three design teams.

At the national level, SWE sponsors many competitions, including Best Technical Paper, Best Video, Best New Student Section. The Humboldt SWE members have successfully competed in many of these competitions.

The Water Treatment Competition engages students in water quality analysis where engineering practices and critical thinking must be used to design effective techniques to solve common water quality problems. Competition rules and water constituents are provided early by the Water Environment Foundation (WEF).
