Awards, Scholarships & Research Funds
Undergraduate
Each spring the department awards students for their outstanding achievement. Award winners are recognized at a department celebration and at a local ASCE chapter meeting.

Thomas William Warnock Outstanding Graduate
Formerly the Outstanding Engineering Graduate Award. A big thanks to Thomas and Rene Warnock for donating a $1,000 reward starting 2018. One or two graduating Engineering students are selected each year for a combination of demonstrated excellent academic achievement and professional potential in Engineering.
Roscoe-Schenler Award
Awarded in honor of two former Humboldt Engineering professors: Jim Roscoe and Bill Schenler. One or more Engineering students each year are recognized for outstanding potential in Engineering. Award amount varies depending on interest rates (typically $500-$1000).
Homer Arnold Award
Awarded in honor of former Humboldt Engineering professor: Homer Arnold. One or two Engineering students each year are recognized for demonstrated outstanding achievement in applied Engineering. Award amount varies depending on interest rates (typically $500 - $1000).
GHD Leadership Award
Awarded to one Engineering junior or senior each year for demonstrated leadership in the Engineering department or through Engineering sponsored clubs such as ASCE, RESU, SHPE, or SWE. The award will recognize a student of high technical competence who also shows leadership potential and desire to help advance the field of Engineering. Award amount is typically $1000. Landau Associates Award
Active 2004-2015: Awarded once a year to a randomly chosen Engineering student who has passed thermodynamics (ENGR 331). Award amount is $500. Bower ERE Scholarship
Awarded once a year to a randomly chosen Engineering student who has passed thermodynamics (ENGR 331). Award amount is $1,000. The sponsor for this award is Engineering alumnus, Jay Bower, P.E. Mr. Bower’s career focused primarily on environmental permitting and on characterization and remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, working directly for industry and as a consultant. For the last 17 years of his full-time career he served as Chief Operating Officer and then CEO of Landau Associates, a Pacific Northwest engineering consulting firm.
Marty Lay SHN Award
Awarded in honor of Marty Lay, an Humboldt Engineering graduate and consulting engineer at SHN Consulting Engineers and Geologists. This award recognizes one Engineering student each year who is nominated by his/her peers for demonstrated teamwork, passion and leadership in Engineering. Award amount is $1,000. Alden Burrows Engineering Scholarship
Awarded in honor of former Humboldt Environmental Resources Engineering professor: Alden Burrows. One student each year is recognized for outstanding leadership and academic excellence in Statics and Dynamics. Award amount is currently $1,000.
The Marion Diller Scholarship
Awarded to an Engineering student who plans to work in sustainability. Students submit an essay where they explain how they have demonstrated outstanding contribution or community service in the area of sustainable and just use of natural resources, e.g. energy efficiency energy conservation, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, recycling or waste reduction. Must have successfully completed ENGR 326 or equivalent. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students submit an essay to apply. Award amount is $2,000.
Engineers Without Borders Award
Active 2017-2022: This award recognizes one student’s contribution to Engineering club projects, fundraisers, and community service, as well as professional-student interaction and social responsibility within and outside the ERE community. Award recipients are selected through a peer nomination process, and the award is given by the North Coast Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders.
Robert and Suzanne Wienke Scholarship
Awarded to a junior or senior level student majoring in Engineering who plans to work in the public service sector or non-profit sector. Students submit an essay to apply. Award amount is currently $1,000.
Robert. W. Campbell Sr. Scholarship
This award recognizes one or more Engineering students who have demonstrated that they are successful in the major and have financial need. Preference is given to intercollegiate athletes and students who have demonstrated commitment to the program. This scholarship includes a financial award of $1000 or more.
Academic Excellence Engineering Graduate Award
This award recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the Engineering program. This prestigious award carries much honor and is reserved for a graduating senior with a consistent record of academic excellence throughout their studies in the Engineering program.
Engineering Community Award
This award, selected and funded by the Engineering faculty, recognizes an Engineering student who has contributed to making the Engineering community a more inclusive, equitable and welcoming place.
Engineering Delta Award
This award, selected and funded by the Engineering faculty, recognizes a student who has inspired the Engineering faculty by their commitment to their own education, and their personal growth throughout their time as a student.
Margie Caisley Engineering Award
The Margie Caisley Award is an annual award of $5,000 for students with undergraduate experience in Engineering or the sciences of Fisheries, Geology, Hydrology, or Watershed and Wildland Sciences interested in pursuing graduate degrees in Environmental Systems in the focus area of Environmental Resources Engineering.
Gearheart Ecological Engineering Research Fund
Fund established to support research in nature-based technologies and fund one or more two-year graduate fellowships annually, undergraduate research assistantships, and provide equipment and travel funding in support of faculty research.
Jay Bower Engineering Research Experience Fund
Fund established to provide undergradute Engineering students with hands-on learning opportunities by supporting engineering faculty research. Funds must be used to support undergraduate research assistantships and may also be used for other research-related expenses such as equipment purchases, travel stipends for faculty and students, publication costs, etc.
Jeffrey S. Navarro Mentorship Program
With this mentorship program, the memory of Jeffrey S. Navarro will help more students obtain their bachelors degree in Environmental Resources Engineering. The program supports 2-3 ERE students per year to serve as mentors to their peers.
Graduate
ERE and ETaP graduate students have access to a number of scholarship and financial aid opportunities, described below. For the four fellowship opportunities described immediately below, in addition to the fellowship grant, each recipient receives an opportunity to earn additional income through research work at the Schatz Energy Research Center. Each of the below fellowships is granted for a one year term, renewable for a second year of study at the discretion of the selection committee. Further information on these fellowships can be found here.
Schatz Energy Fellowship
This fellowship is sponsored by the Schatz Energy Research Center for a graduate student who is pursuing studies related to renewable energy or energy efficiency. The fellowship provides $15,000 per year in support to the selected student.
Blue Lake Rancheria Fellowship for Clean Energy Studies
This fellowship is funded by the Blue Lake Rancheria in honor of legendary local STEM educator, the late Jean Rousseau. It provides $15,000 per year in support to the selected student.
Donald and Andrea Tuttle Fellowship for Clean Energy Studies
The Tuttles established this fellowship as part of an effort to tackle the challenges posed by climate change and to reduce its impacts on humanity and ecosystems. It provides $15,000 per year in support to the selected student. Incoming fellows are accepted every other year.
The Christina and Jack West Fellowship
The West Fellowship supports innovation and advancement of clean renewable energy technology. It provides $19,000 in financial support per year. Incoming fellows are accepted every other year.
Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP)
ETaP and ERE students from the states listed below are eligible to attend Humboldt while paying "in-state" fees. For students from eligible states outside of California, this reduces the cost of graduate education considerably (see the Financial Services page for more information about the fee levels - students from eligible WRGP states do not need to pay the "Nonresident Tuition Fee"). Students from eligible states should indicate their interest to access the WRGP rate when they apply (e.g. by including a sentence about this in their application essay). Eligible states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
