Bird Banding
A cornerstone of ornithological research and training.
Bird banding is one of the most important tools in ornithology. By placing a uniquely numbered, lightweight aluminum band on a bird's leg, researchers can identify individual birds whenever they are encountered again. Combined with standardized measurements of age, sex, body condition, molt, and breeding status, banding allows scientists to study survival, migration, productivity, population trends, and the ecology of birds throughout their lives. For more than a century, banding has been the foundation for countless discoveries in avian biology and remains central to bird conservation and monitoring today.
Learning to safely capture, handle, identify, and band birds is also one of the most valuable skills an aspiring ornithologist can acquire. The HOC operates two bird banding stations close to campus, providing exceptional exposure and opportunity for Humboldt students.

Wright Bird Banding Station
Located on the northern edge of Eureka on Humboldt Bay, the Wright Bird Banding Station serves as HOCs primary training site for students learning the fundamentals of bird banding. Operating during the summer breeding season, the station contributes to the international Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) program, a long-term effort that tracks bird populations by measuring annual productivity, recruitment, and adult survival.
Through volunteer internships, Cal Poly Humboldt students receive hands-on training alongside experienced banders, learning how to safely extract birds from mist-nets, handle birds ethically, apply federal bird bands, collect standardized measurements, and determine age and sex. For many students, Wright provides their first opportunity to develop the practical skills that form the foundation of a career in ornithology.
Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory
Nestled in the Coastal Dune Forests: The Story and Purpose of HBBO
Founded in 1982 by visionary ornithologist Dr. C.J. Ralph, the Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory (HBBO) stands as a cornerstone of avian research in Northern California. Located next to the pristine Lanphere Dunes Unit of the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, HBBO is the second-oldest bird observatory in the state. For over four decades, Dr. CJ Ralph’s pioneering leadership and unwavering dedication sustained this vital research hub, capturing critical long-term data on resident and migratory landbirds. Today, the observatory enters a grateful new chapter on the very same historic grounds, continuing its mission thanks to the generous hospitality of Bill and Kimberly Rich, who graciously host the monitoring site on their land.
A Critical Link in Continental Avian Conservation
Beyond its local impact, HBBO serves as a vital node in a vast, interconnected network of scientific discovery. The observatory operates a long-running bird banding station that feeds data into the regional Klamath Demographic Network, championed alongside the Klamath Bird Observatory (KBO). This regional dataset integrates directly into the continent-wide Avian Knowledge Network (AKN). By tracking population abundance, demographic trends, and survival rates across decades, HBBO’s efforts directly inform large-scale conservation strategies. The data gathered here helps scientists understand how changing climates and shifting habitats impact bird populations along the Pacific Flyway.

Training the Next Generation: Opportunities for Cal Poly Humboldt Students
As a core partner of the Humboldt Ornithology Collective, HBBO bridges professional conservation science with hands-on education. The observatory offers an unparalleled field classroom for students at Cal Poly Humboldt looking to gain real-world experience. Through seasonal internships, volunteer opportunities, and collaborative research projects, students can master mist-netting, bird banding, and species identification alongside experienced biologists. This direct connection to active field research empowers the next generation of ecologists to protect the vibrant ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Operating from spring through fall, HBBO captures especially high numbers during fall migration, when thousands of songbirds move through Humboldt Bay on their southward journey down the Pacific Flyway. These high capture rates and diversity give interns extensive practice handling birds and mastering advanced skills, such as ageing and sexing songbirds from molt patterns, plumage, and other subtle field marks. Interns also learn standardized migration-monitoring protocols and contribute data on migration timing, population trends, and bird ecology in coastal Northern California—experience that prepares them for professional work in the field. The station also operates a Motus tower—part of an international network that tracks tagged birds and other animals as they move across the continent—giving interns hands-on exposure to modern movement-tracking technology.
