Academic Research - Behavior Analysis Emphasis

The Behavior Analysis emphasis at Cal Poly Humboldt began in the mid-2000s in the Psychology Department under Dr. Mary Gruber. Coursework is taught collaboratively across psychology, school psychology, and special education, allowing students from multiple disciplines to learn together and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, an essential skill for behavior analysts.

The program is In-Person and includes a 38-credit curriculum with coursework and a culminating research project. Through established partnerships with local ABA agencies in Arcata and Eureka, students gain supervised clinical experience under BCBAs. Graduates earn a Master of Arts in Psychology and are prepared for BCBA certification, with optional preparation for doctoral study in behavior analysis for those interested in teaching or research.

About Behavior Analysis

What is Behavior Analysis?
Behavior Analysis is a scientific approach focused on understanding how behavior interacts with the physical and social environment. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) uses evidence-based principles of learning and behavior to address socially meaningful challenges and improve quality of life.

Professional Scope
ABA has strong empirical support dating back to the 1960s and is widely used across settings such as homes, schools, hospitals, clinics, and community organizations. Interventions are individualized, data-driven, and continuously evaluated for effectiveness.

FAQs

What does a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) do?
BCBAs conduct behavioral assessments, design and oversee interventions, analyze data, train staff and caregivers, and supervise behavior technicians. They work wherever behavior impacts quality of life. Follow this link for more information.

What credential is required to become a behavior analyst?
A BCBA is a graduate-level certification for independent practitioners who also supervise others delivering ABA services. Follow this link to learn more about the types of professional credentials in behavior analysis.

How do I become a BCBA?

  • Earn a master’s degree in behavior analysis or a related field
  • Complete BACB-approved coursework
  • Accrue 2,000 supervised clinical hours
  • Pass the BCBA certification exam

What’s the difference between a Behavior Analyst and a School Psychologist?
School psychologists focus on assessments and services within school systems (e.g., IEPs). Behavior analysts specialize in functional behavior assessment and intervention across many settings and populations, often collaborating with school psychologists.

Does the program admit part-time students?
Part-time enrollment is not encouraged. Once supervised hours begin, students have five years to complete all BCBA requirements, or hours reset.

Does the program admit blended AR students?
No. Blended AR students would still need additional years to complete the course sequence. Applying directly to the two-year master’s program is recommended.

How can I gain experience in ABA?
Local ABA agencies frequently hire students as behavior technicians. Search job boards (e.g., “behavior technician”) or contact regional providers directly.

Is a Master’s thesis required?
 Students complete either:

  • Master’s thesis (recommended for PhD-bound students), or
  • Master’s project (recommended for practitioners)

Can I count clinical hours before starting graduate coursework?
No. Hours may only be counted after beginning behavior analysis coursework.

I already have a master’s degree. Can I complete only the BCBA coursework?
Yes. Courses may be taken through Extended Education (Open University) without earning a second degree. Follow this link for instructions.

Can a letter of recommendation come from a BCBA supervisor?
Yes. Letters from clinical supervisors who can speak to your professional skills and growth are welcome.
