Matias Solorzano
Psychology, 2025
Matias will start a PhD program in Special Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during the Fall 2025 semester. He also received an Education Graduate Research Scholars fellowship from the School of Education at UW-Madison to assist him in pursuing his research interests. At UW-Madison, Matias will conduct research on the transition to adulthood in employment for autistic individuals. He seeks to connect more autistic adults to resources that will help them find employment. Recently, Matias completed an internship with the California Department of Developmental Services in the Autism Services Branch. This internship helped him make connections at DDS and made him realize that working in civil service is a good career path for individuals interested in making the world a better place for individuals with disabilities.
Leah Rankin
Psychology, 2018
Leah started at Humboldt as a single mom juggling homelife, work, and school. They obtained a job in the behavioral health field and learned quickly that supporting individuals living with co-occurring disorders was their calling. They've been providing services in the field for ten years and have worked up to becoming the Program Administrator at a Social Rehabilitation Program that prepares our persons served for community reintegration. Leah encourages people to continue to follow their passions and dreams, to stay focused on what they wish to accomplish, and to remember it's never too late to get started.
Kristian Espinoza
Psychology, 2017
Kristian Espinoza, Psychology, 2017, is happily married and has a six-month old baby. Espinoza works with marginalized communities through a program called Wrap Around and before that they worked at a group-home serving the 6-12 year old children that lived there.
Eddie Shin
Psychology, 2014
Eddie Shin, Psychology, 2014, got married a year ago to the love of his life who loves doing what he loved to do most when in Humboldt, hiking and spending time outdoors! He moved to Orem, Utah shortly after graduating and in 2016 landed a job at a residential treatment center where he became their neurofeedback practitioner. It's been awesome working with these kids in improving their emotions and behaviors through a holistic intervention in their treatment! He is currently working on his master's toward becoming a marriage and family therapist. He misses the redwoods and Humboldt coast dearly and thinks about that beautiful place every day! He lives his life the Humboldt way still and stays green.
Stephanie Rosier
Psychology, 2014
After graduation, Stephanie worked as a senior client advocate at Humboldt Domestic Violence Services. She then moved on to work as the Early Recovery Specialist at Aegis Treatment Centers in Ventura, California, for six years. In 2022 she moved to Missoula, Montana, where she continued to utilize the skills she learned obtaining her Psychology degree at Humboldt, acting as a mental health coordinator for Missoula County.
Stephanie Rosier
Psychology, 2014
After graduating from HSU, Stephanie worked as a Senior Advocate at Humboldt Domestic Violence Services for two years and as a Shelter Coordinator at YWCA Glendale. She then worked as an Early Recovery Specialist at Aegis Treatment Centers in Ventura, CA, and two years ago, she moved to Missoula, MT, where she worked as a county Mental Health Coordinator. She loves the nature-focused culture of Montana but misses the redwoods! Humboldt State University provided her with many experiences and tools that have helped her build her career and give back to the community, and she will always be grateful.
Eddie Shin
Psychology, 2014
Eddie Shin has just started working as a marriage and family therapist with children and adolescents who have gone through trauma of various levels, as well as working with their families in January 2022. Shin explains that it's been a really rewarding job so far and is incredible the impact respect and hope have in helping a child or teenager turn their perspective around to develop a better life. Shin finds it has been challenging, but well worth it!
Stefanie Lauren Kalin
Psychology, 2010
Stefanie Lauren Kalin, 2010 Psychology, is a licensed marriage and family therapist. She has developed her clinical experiences providing mental health services to couples, families, adults with chronic disease, severe, persistent, mental illness, adolescents, and children with chronic trauma and dependency. She specializes in mind-body connection and trauma residency with training in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Stefanie met her husband, Rory, in undergrad at HSU and became Mr. and Mrs. Kalin in 2015. They returned to Humboldt in 2017 to begin careers serving Humboldt County. Stefanie will be practicing as a mental health clinician for Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services.
Ashley B Birkeland
Psychology, 2005
In June, 2019 Ashley Birkeland, Psychology, 2005, completed her Ph.D. in Education Policy, Organizations and Leadership at the University of Washington. Her research focused on dual-credit course taking in the state of Washington.
Magen Golobay
Psychology, 2004
Magen Golobay, 2004 Psychology, currently works at a special school teaching students with severe emotional and behavioral disturbances. Golobay’s work includes helping kids suffering from mental illness, neglect, abuse, and other difficulties get an education while also ensuring they receive support and treatment. The goal is to help students become productive members of society and remove the stigma of their mental illness.
