Academic Programs

Vision

As stewards of exemplary learning, Academic Programs collectively provide a transformative experience that meets students where they are and actively addresses systemic inequities that impact groups through dialogue and action. The division models ethical leadership within the university, the local community, and the California State University system, making evidence-informed decisions that promote transparency, inclusivity, and coordination across all levels. Through responsible recruitment and retention strategies for students, staff, and faculty, and by prioritizing and aligning resources to enhance learning, retention, and graduation outcomes, Academic Programs ensure that all efforts are focused on better serving students and fostering an equitable, thriving academic environment.

Undergraduate Studies

The Academic Programs Office manages a diverse suite of curricular and co-curricular programs designed to ensure a meaningful and inclusive academic experience for all Humboldt undergraduates. From promoting the value of a broad liberal arts education to fostering a sense of belonging among first-year students, we provide thoughtful, dedicated support to help undergrads thrive from day one through graduation.

Undergraduate Degrees

At Cal Poly Humboldt, undergraduates can choose from a rich breadth of bachelor’s degree programs spanning the sciences, arts, humanities, business, engineering and social sciences. The comprehensive list of majors reflects the university’s commitment to both foundational knowledge and real‐world application. Humboldt Students benefit from the polytechnic approach to learning, which emphasizes hands-on experience, interdisciplinary collaboration, and preparing for evolving career paths. Whether one’s interest lies in environmental resources, data science, liberal studies, or leadership, Humboldt offers a supportive academic environment to engage deeply, explore broadly, and put knowledge into action.

Individualized Degree Plan (IDP) Program

The Individualized Degree Plan (IDP) offers a transformative B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies, inviting students to design a major that reflects their unique passions and aspirations. Through a dynamic blend of courses across disciplines, a supportive core in interdisciplinary thinking, and hands-on learning experiences, students craft a pathway that prepares them for meaningful careers. With flexible hybrid and online options, the IDP program empowers diverse learners—especially transfer, returning, and non-traditional students—to turn curiosity into purposeful impact.

General Education & All-University Requirements (GEAR) Program

The purpose of the GEAR program at Cal Poly Humboldt is to cultivate a broad array of foundational skills, multiple forms of disciplinary knowledge, and diverse perspectives essential for success both to university students and to lifelong learners. Students who seek to “improve the global human condition and our relationship with the environment” will find in the GEAR program a commitment across disciplines to provide breadth and to prepare them for their own chosen futures.

Graduate Studies

We offer 15 graduate degree programs including many “hands-on” experiences through lab and fieldwork. Our mission is to provide quality post-baccalaureate programs, set and maintain high academic standards for graduate courses and degree programs, and serve the Humboldt Community. Our graduate programs are part of the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP), allowing students from the Western US states and territories to pay in-state tuition.
