The Benefits of Assigned Academic Advisors
Meeting with an academic advisor regularly is a proactive way for students to gain personalized guidance on course selection, degree requirements, and valuable campus resources to navigate college life.
A student’s assigned advisor may be a faculty advisor from their major department or an advisor from the Academic Advising Center, the EOP Office, El Centro, ITEPP, ADPI+MENA Center, the Umoja Center, INRSEP, or the Q Center. Some students may have more than one assigned advisor.
- Faculty Advisors - All students will at some point be matched with a faculty advisor in their major. It’s important for students to create a relationship with their faculty advisor as they can support students with class selection and navigating the path to degree, finding internships and professional development opportunities, as well as write letters of support for graduate school.
- EOP - EOP/SSS — Students who are admitted to EOP/SSS when applying to Humboldt are matched with a dedicated EOP advisor to provide support with academic planning and connecting to resources throughout their time here.
- Centers for Inclusive Academic & Career Excellence (CIACE) - Students looking for culturally-based academic support, including mentoring and other community-building activities may apply for advising support from a CIACE Center.
- Athletics - Student Athletes are assigned an athletics advisor during their time at Humboldt to support them with maintaining sports eligibility.
- The Academic Advising Center (AAC) is the hub for holistic and proactive academic advising at Cal Poly Humboldt with a team of full time advisors who support about 90% of all freshmen and sophomores.

This list can be helpful for quickly identifying primary role academic advisors for student referrals, when running reports, or reviewing advising assignments in Student Center.
When to Assign or Reassign Advisees
Advisor assignments can happen at different times through the year.
New students:
- Each semester, first time freshmen and transfer students are admitted to Cal Poly Humboldt and are paired with an advisor, oftentimes the department chair, for class selection and onboarding.
Junior status achieved:
- After census: Most freshmen and sophomore students at Humboldt receive advising from a primary-role advisor from the Academic Advising Center and are transitioned to a faculty advisor once they have earned 60 units. Coordinate with the Academic Advising Center advisor supporting your department for reassignments.
Throughout the semester:
- Major Changes: As Major Change Forms are routed through the department for signature, students should be matched with an advisor in their new major. Be sure to remove the previous advisor unless they are an advisor with EOP and/or CIACE and/or athletic advisor.
- Advisor Requests: Sometimes students will request a particular advisor. It’s important to honor these requests so that students have an advisor they feel best connected to. Please note: AAC advisors only advise students up to 60 units.

Advisor Assignment Cleanup
When assigning a new advisor to a student, be sure to remove records for any previous advisors. Keep in mind that some students might have two advisors, for example, student athletes. When in doubt, refer to the Academic Advisor Contact Information by Department above. Keeping advisor assignments updated will help to eliminate any confusion for the student, especially if they have a “hold” in their Student Center.
