Advisor Tools

Advising requires a range of tools and resources to support students in achieving their academic and personal goals. This list highlights helpful tools to support the advising experience. While not exhaustive, it offers a starting point for identifying resources that promote effective, student-centered advising.

The Degree Audit for Students (DARS)

An academic audit that matches a student’s academic history with their degree requirements. The DARS report is essential to advising. 

How to access your advisee's DARS and more:

Review the audit with the student. If you and your advisee think the audit is not accurate, contact the Office of the Registrar. Ask for a Transfer & Graduation Counselor.

The DARS Degree Planner is a useful tool that students can use to build a degree plan for graduation humboldt.edu/registrar/plan-your-degree/dars-planning-tools

Schedule Planner is a tool for generating class schedules based on the students planned classes in their DARS Degree Planner humboldt.edu/registrar/dars-schedules-student-user-guide.

Transferable Courses Tool:

assist.org is a database maintained collaboratively by the CSU, UC and California Community Colleges to help advisors and students determine the transferability of classes.

Class Scheduling Tools:

The Class Schedule website provides a wealth of information to help select the best classes. Visit https://www.humboldt.edu/registrar/register/class-schedule to find the following resources and more!

  • Links to Special Class Listings like double-count classes, special topics and partial terms.
  • Descriptions of Class Meeting Modes (Example: In the schedule, TBA typically means To Be Asynchronous!)
  • Class Schedule Table View helps to quickly identify classes with reserved seats and up-to-the-day reserve numbers.
  • Archived Schedules.

Using the interactive Class Schedule to find classes - Tips:

Search for classes using the drop-down search criteria:

  • Mode of Instruction can be used to search for online classes, or in-person classes, only.
  • Additional Search Criteria (GE, Sustainability, Zero Cost Materials, Service Learning) is particularly helpful for finding general education courses being offered in a particular GEAR area.
  • Class Days and Times helps students find classes that fit into their busy schedules.
  • Class Unit Values lists one-unit classes.
     

CAL-GETC - GEAR Requirements Changing Fall 2025:

Recent changes to GEAR (General Education and All University Requirements) at the
Chancellor's Office are being adopted by all CSUs for Fall 2025. The quick gist:

  • Revised naming conventions: “Areas A through F” now “Areas 1 through 6”.
  • Arts & Humanities (now Area 3A&B) decreased from 9 to 6 required units.
  • Physical & Bio Sciences (now Area 5) increased to 7 units, to include 1 unit lab.
  • Lifelong Learning & Self-Development (formerly Area E) is discontinued.
