Henry Solares
Lecturer - Anthropology
Buenas! My name is Henry Solares, my pronouns are they/them, and I am originally from Southern California with parents from Guatemala. I am a proud first-generation former transfer student (Mt. SAC) and excited to teach in the department that gave me a bachelors and a masters degree. I am an applied cultural anthropologist and I have worked in a bunch of different fields in Humboldt County. The applied work I am most proud of, was my time as a grant writer for the Yurok Tribe’s Planning Department during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. I owe my success in that role to my indigenous collaborators with their endless patience and kind mentorship.
Research Focus
I have conducted fieldwork/research at Cal Poly Humboldt on marginalized groups and sexualized violence prevention as part of a thesis. Separately, I have also done fieldwork/research on major-based peer mentoring with the Sociology Department at Cal Poly Humboldt. My research interests include visual anthropology, ethnofiction, comics, anti-violence work on college campuses, peer mentoring, disability, indigenous development, photography, and fat studies.
