Jason Valdez
Lecturer - Anthropology
I’m an applied researcher with roots in Biological Anthropology and Philosophy. My career began in Applied Behavioral Analysis, where I applied quantitative and qualitative methods to support families and individuals with special needs, eventually leading teams in this work.
I then worked for Planned Parenthood Northern California where I taught sex education across Humboldt, Trinity, and Del Norte counties, co-facilitated a peer education group to design instructional media, and spearheaded a service design initiative partnering Planned Parenthood and Regional Centers to deliver sexual and reproductive health education to people with special needs while measuring learning outcomes.
I earned a Master’s in Human-Computer Interaction and Design at University of Washington, expanding my research and design skills to create equitable services and products for historically marginalized populations. Since then, I’ve contributed to academic research on smart home technology and ethics, robotics, national initiatives to create more universal access to health education and educational software. In these roles, I've collaborated with the ADA, the Healthy Teen Network, and conducted work funded by the Gates and Bezos Foundations in partnership with Carnegie Mellon, Arizona State University, and the University of Washington serving as a Usability Researcher consultant and Service Designer."
