Gema Ortiz Lombardo
World Languages and Cultures, 2009
Gema Ortiz Lombardo, 2009 Spanish, earned her Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Bilingual Education from New Mexico State University in 2011. While pursuing her M.A., Lombardo worked with NMSU as a School Garden Curriculum Coordinator. Lombardo also served as a managing editor for the resource book, “Implementing a school and Community Garden.” In 2013, She provided college and career guidance to special-needs students at high school level. She is happily married and is currently an Admissions Counselor for Humboldt State and a recruiter for HSU’s College of Natural Resources & Sciences, focusing on promoting opportunities for hispanic students.

I am a Humboldt Alumni currently attending the Primary Care Associate Program (Physician Assistant) at Stanford University. Also, I will be applying to the Master's of Medical Science program at Saint Francis University this December. My history training at Humboldt State has been invaluable to my success. My knowledge in history has allowed me to better understand the historical backgrounds that brought about socioeconomic and cultural boundaries that plaque healthcare today. This understanding has helped me understand the need for primary healthcare in underserved areas, often representing those affected by these boundaries. Additionally, the history deparment at Humboldt State has trained me to effectively organize and communicate (both written and one-on-one) to both patients and other members of the healthcare team and to critically evaluate pharmaceutical updates, which may contain a high level of bias. I would like to especially thank Drs. Marschke, Mays, and Pasztor.
Heidi (Foote) Bowman

In the fall of 2017, Heidi Bowman, English, 2009, helped open the "sister charter school": CSArts-SGV. A free, public comprehensive high school in California's San Gabriel Valley, that embeds seven hours of conservatory arts instruction following the academic school day. Heidi has the distinct honor of being the Department Chair, and because of HSU's English Education program she graduated from in 2009, the department is the "Literature, Language, and Composition" team. The linguistics courses, the not-old-dead-white-guys literature courses, the pedagogy-built-into-my-soul courses, shaped her into an English teacher to be reckoned with!
Jason Atherton
Communication, 2009
After graduating HSU in 2009, Jason went to graduate school at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. He lived with his HSU classmate while studying Educational Leadership and Policy. After completing his Masters degree, Jason held positions at universities in Florida, Michigan, and Utah. In 2019, Jason won Outstanding Academic Advisor for the local, state, and national advising conferences. He now lives in Salt Lake City and works with two other HSU Alumni who share his same birthday. Jason appreciates how ahead HSU was in diversity and social justice issues and is amazed how conversations that were happening in Arcata 10 years ago are now in public discourse. Go Jacks!
Julianna Marie Boggs
Journalism, 2009
Julianna Marie Boggs, 2009 Journalism, has picked up a successful career as a freelancer writing about arts and culture for The Sacramento News & Review, food and agro-politics for Edible Sacramento magazine and Sacramento Foodways, and is now researching material for a pop-science book about the history and impact of nuclear power in the world today.

Immediately after graduation I worked for the Humboldt Area Foundation on different grant programs, which provided me with a wonderful experience in the field of grant writing and grant review. A year later I was invited to work with the State of California as a Native American Liaison for the Department of Transportation. I gained a lot of experience starting my freshman year at Humboldt working on campus for the Center for Indian Community Development. I believe that my degree in History has prepared me to succeed at my job. Two out of the three of our Native American Liaisons have their degrees in History.
Emily Maria Harbaugh
International Studies, 2008
Emily Maria Harbaugh, 2008 International Studies, is a law student at UC Hastings, College of the Law in San Francisco. She hopes to become a public defender because she is passionate about indigent defendant rights and low-income legal service work. The language skills that she gained while studying at Humboldt State have been instrumental to her work thus far.

After graduating from the University of Central Lancashire, UK in 2009 with a MSc in Forensic Anthropology, I have taken a job with the Humboldt County Coroner's Office as a Deputy Coroner.
Chad Kaufman

After graduating from HSU in 2008 and working in a bilingual school for a bit, Chad then moved down to Cholula, Mexico to pursue a Master's degree. In 2011 he graduated with an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from La Universidad de las Americas Puebla, Mexico. After graduating he moved back to Minnesota with his amazing spouse to be close to family.
Going on 8 years working as a full-time Spanish Interpreter at Children's Minnesota: a fantastic system of pediatric clinics and hospitals.
Gloria Miranda

Gloria's most recent accomplishment is that she is now a recent graduate from Claremont Graduate University Masters of Science in Information Systems Technology in Data Science as well as a Masters of Business for the Arts through Sotheby's Institute of Art at Claremont Graduate University.
